Legislature passes emergency restroom access bill

Posted by Jennifer Sullivan

A proposal that received a lobbying push from Pearl Jam guitarist and Crohn's disease sufferer Mike McCready quickly passed the House this afternoon.

The measure, which passed 93-0, will now head to Gov. Chris Gregoire for approval. If signed into law the bill would grant people with gastrointestinal disorders emergency access to businesses' private restrooms.

According to the legislation, people urgently needing the restroom would have to show employees at the business an identification card indicating that they suffer from an eligible medical condition or they must show a statement signed by their health-care provider or the Department of Health.

The restroom also must be located in a place where it won't pose a health or safety risk to the customer seeking access.

Earlier in the Legislative session, McCready testified before a House committee in support of House Bill 1138. The Seattle guitarist shared personal stories about the complications he has suffered due to Crohn's Disease. McCready and his wife have long worked as activists for Crohn's patients.
