Hans Dunshee to propose $3 billion bond measure for school construction
Posted by Andrew Garber
House Capital Budget Committee Chairman Hans Dunshee, D-Snohomish, is releasing a proposal Monday to send voters a $3 billion bond measure that would pay for school construction.
Dunshee wouldn't say much except that "this is what the governor and I have been talking about. Repair schools and create jobs," he said.
It's not clear how the bonds would be financed.
Gov. Chris Gregoire said last month "I am interested in asking the people if they would consider a bond measure that ... would allow us to potentially put people to work. With projects out there like K-12 construction, or technology renovation or green renovation of our K-12 system. Something along the line where it's real jobs on the ground."
The governor's office today said they haven't seen Dunshee's proposal yet and had no comment, except that Gregoire likes the concept.
It's not clear how much support Dunshee's proposal has among House Democrats. House Speaker Frank Chopp said Thursday that he'd discussed the package with Dunshee.
"I have talked a lot with Hans, in fact I met earlier today with him about it. It's definitely on the table to consider and it's a legitimate thing," Chopp said. "When you look at driving an effort to create jobs doing construction projects is a way to do that."
However, House Majority Leader Lynn Kessler said today that Dunshee "informed the caucus last night and he told us all about it."
"It has mixed reviews," she said.
A press release sent out by Dunshee described it as a jobs package that would create 90,000 construction jobs in the state.
More on Monday.
