Proposed state budgets may be out this week ... or next. How's April sound?

Posted by Andrew Garber

The word on when the Senate and House will release their proposed state budgets changes by the hour.

The Senate was expected to release it's budget on Thursday and the House on Friday, but negotiators say the two sides are still not in agreement on key cuts.

Sen. Rodney Tom, vice chairman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee, told me a few minutes ago that he was pretty certain the budgets would not come out this week.

However, House Majority Leader Lynn Kessler said she felt both sides were very close to an agreement and it's still possible for the budgets to be released this week.

Lawmakers say the most recent state revenue forecast, which projected an additional $550 million drop in state tax collections, is part of the reason for the delay. It meant they had to look for more places to cut. Overall, the Legislature has to cut around $4 billion from the next two-year budget.

House and Senate negotiators are making an extra effort this year to reach agreement on the major cuts. Sen. Ed Murray, the Senate Democratic caucus chairman, said both sides are trying to "work together and not be played against each other by the special interest groups."

If the Senate came out with cuts not contained in the House budget, the interest groups "would run to the other house and we'd be the enemy," he said.

UPDATE

The Senate budget is now supposed to come out Monday. Maybe.
