Washington state's share of Senate stimulus package

Posted by Richard Wagoner

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray's office provided a breakdown of how much money Washington state would get from the stimulus package that passed the U.S. Senate today. The bill now must be reconciled with the House stimulus package.

Here's Washington state's share, according to Murray:

  • Highways: $495 million for Washington state roads, highways and bridges (there's another $5.5 billion available nationwide for large transportation projects).

  • Transit: $200 million for transit projects.

  • Ferries: $60 million for a nationwide grant program to fund ferry and ferry terminal upgrades, of which Washington would get a significant share.

  • State support: $648 million for education and other services that face budget cuts.

  • Unemployment insurance: An additional $100 per month in unemployment insurance benefits to 404,000 workers in Washington. Also, would extend unemployment benefits to 44,000 laid-off workers.

  • Worker training: $64 million to train unemployed workers for new jobs.

  • Hanford: $6.4 billion for nuclear cleanup nationwide. Historically, Hanford nuclear reservation has received a significant portion of this money.

  • BPA: $3.25 billion in additional borrowing authority to modernize the region's power grid and accommodate alternative energy sources, such as wind power.

  • Weatherization: $36 million to weatherize homes and businesses.

  • Medicaid: $2.02 billion to cover Medicaid costs.

  • Foodstamps: $246 million in foodstamps statewide.

  • Law enforcement: $22 million for crime-fighting efforts. Also would include $1 billion nationwide for grants to fund police positions.
