More state budget cuts ahead?

Posted by Andrew Garber

Victor Moore, the governor's budget director, says the state budget shortfall is getting worse and that more cuts in state programs likely will be needed.

Back in November state forecasters were projecting the Legislature would have to deal with a budget shortfall approaching $6 billion. Since then, tax collections have dropped an additional $134 million below projections.

Gov. Chris Gregoire has already proposed more than $3 billion in budget cuts to help close the gap. But the bad news keeps coming. Said Moore:

"The retail is just tanking. The real estate excise tax continues to under perform and the retail is still just really disappointing."
