Minghella and Pollack get their Oscar nod

Posted by Moira Macdonald

Two beloved filmmakers will have their names read on Oscar night for one last time, after all. Writer/director Anthony Minghella ("Cold Mountain," "The Talented Mr. Ripley") and director/producer/actor Sydney Pollack ("Tootsie," "Out of Africa," "Michael Clayton") both died last year, saddening a worldwide film community. They were the two original producers of "The Reader," Stephen Daldry's Holocaust drama starring Kate Winslet, which has received five Oscar nominations.

Those who heard "The Reader" being announced as a best picture nominee last Thursday also heard the words "credits to be determined." The best picture award is always given to the film's producers, and the Academy has a rule that no more than three producers can be nominated. "The Reader" had four, and a special meeting had to be held. Today, the Academy announced that it was making an exception to its rule, and that Minghella and Pollack's names would be on the nomination. A nice tribute, to two talented men lost too soon.
