It took awhile to inform all the players amidst the scramble to exit Cashman Field and head to Minnesota, but the final roster has been set.
The highlights:
--Matt Tuiasosopo made the team, filling Ichiro's spot on the roster. He was clearly thrilled as he exited the clubhouse, saying that his first call was to his parents. (I'll have many quotes in a later post, but want to get the news out first). The Mariners basically wanted to reward Tuiasosopo for his outstanding spring. Don Wakamatsu said Ronny Cedeno could play outfield if needed.
--Two rookie pitchers with no major-league experience, Chris Jakubauskas and Shawn Kelley, are on the team in the bullpen. Roy Corcoran also made it. Odd man out is Jesus Delgado, who was outrighted to Tacoma (meaning that he cleared waivers). There are no lefties in the pen.
--Rob Johnson is officially the backup catcher, with Jamie Burke re-assigned to minor league camp.
--Mike Sweeney officially selected from Tacoma to join the 40-man (and 25-man) roster, but that's been a foregone conclusion.
--Brandon Morrow, who had an impressive inning today, will be the closer, Wakamatsu said.
--Ken Griffey Jr. will start in right field on Opening Night in Minnesota, and Endy Chavez will be the leadoff hitter.
--The toughest cut, according to Wakamatsu, was Mike Wilson, re-assigned to minor league camp.
I'll post this, then update with the final roster.
