Phillippe Aumont returns from WBC

Posted by Larry Stone

Phillippe Aumont, the Mariners' No. 1 draft two years ago, returned from his brief but eventful stint with Canada in the World Baseball Classic. The Canadians were eliminated without winning a game, but Aumont made his mark with his only of work, in which he worked into a bases-loaded, no-out jam late in a tight game with the United States, then worked out of the inning without giving up a run. The score was 6-4 at the time, and Canada wound up losing 6-5 as J.J. Putz nailed down the save. Aumont received a hero's welcome when he returned to the dugout after

"It was something special,'' he said. "Lots of feelings, lots of adrenalin going on. All the stress was relieved a little; it was like, 'This is over, I did it. It was a great moment, especially all the guys saying, 'That's something amazing.' It was great feeling at the moment.''

Now Aumont will report to minor-league camp, though manager Don Wakamatsu plans to use him in some Cactus League games. Not being in major-league camp, as he was last spring, is disappointing to Aumont.

"I don't have any control over that,'' he said. "There's people up there (in the front office) that have their reasons. Obviously, I wasn't really happy about it, but we'll go through camp and we'll start the season. I'll try to do the best I can and stay healthy."

Aumont suffered from elbow tendinitis last season and didn't pitch after June, but he says his arm feels good, evidenced by his electric outing in the WBC.
