Bowden out as Nats' GM
Posted by Geoff Baker
We discussed this topic on Geoff Baker Live! the other day, how Washington Nationals GM Jim Bowden was unlikely to escape the scandal surrounding his regime's recruitment of Latin American prospects. Well, he didn't make it. Bowden did indeed resign despite his protests of innocence in any wrongdoing. The FBI is investigating the entire affair, in which alleged kickbacks were paid to team officials recruiting the young prospects.
As I mentioned to you on-air the other day, I'm hearing that Tony LaCava, a finalist for the Mariners' GM gig last October, is the leading candidate to replace Bowden. LaCava worked for the Montreal Expos before that team moved to Washington and is friendly with many still in the organization. We'll see if the Blue Jays allow him out of his front office gig.
How does this impact the M's? Well, the Nats are now an organization in disarray. Not exactly where you want to be as you go about figuring out whether to draft San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg with your No. 1 overall pick. If Strasburg isn't taken by the Nats, who will want to do some negotiating on a signing bonus before the draft, then the M's have a clear shot at the pitcher.
