Mariners sign Mike Sweeney

Posted by Larry Stone

It's a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training. Sweeney has Tacoma connections and I know has always had interest in playing for the Mariners. His wife, the daughter of former major-leaguer Jim Nettles (who is brother of Graig Nettles) is from the Tacoma area. Sweeney, 35, was with the A's last year, but had surgery on both his knees and was limited to 42 games. The A's -- whose bench coach last year was current Mariners' manager Don Wakamatsu -- released him on Sept. 9.

Here's the story I wrote for the internet. We'll be talking to Sweeney at 1 p.m., so I'll update.
