The lowdown on Hermida
Posted by Geoff Baker
OK, here's what we know about the Mariners and Marlins talking about a possible swap involving Florida outfielder Jeremy Hermida.
The Mariners apparently approached the Marlins yesterday and made a proposal for Hermida that the Marlins didn't like. Both teams went back and forth for a bit -- this wasn't just one of those exploratory conversations -- but could not reach a deal. Florida is looking for catching and is intrigued by Mariners prospect Adam Moore.
As I said, no deal was reached, obviously. For now, things appear to be at a standstill on that front.
The Marlins also had conversations yesterday with the Texas Rangers, but that also did not bear fruit.
On the weird-sounding front, the Detroit Tigers, I'm told, are apparently making noise about inking John Smoltz to a deal to be their closer. He's from Michigan, don't forget. I dunno about that. Sounds like posturing and not wanting to meet the M's demands for J.J. Putz. We'll see. Talk is cheap at these meetings.
