Previous three-way deal had collapsed
Posted by Geoff Baker
A view of the Bellagio Hotel lobby moments ago as everyone awaits word on the big trade. By the way, that Jeremy Hermida trade proposal is now said to have fizzled. On to bigger fish, so to speak...
It seems the current three-team trade proposal between the Mariners, Mets and Indians, involving J.J. Putz, came together after another three-team effort fell apart. That prior effort involved the Mariners, Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays.
In that proposal, the Tigers would have kicked first baseman Jeff Larish into the pot, but not outfielder Matt Joyce. No word on whether the Rays would have sent someone to Seattle, but the M's wound up walking away. At that point, the Tigers turned around and dealt Joyce to the Rays for starter Edwin Jackson.
So, a whirlwind of things happening at once here. Still waiting for official word on whether or not this current proposal -- which would send Indians right fielder Franklin Gutierrez and Mets pitcher Aaron Heilman, and Class AA first baseman Mike Carp to Seattle -- gets done.
Putz would go to the Mets and minor league infielder Luis Valbuena to the Indians.
