Ryan Feierabend is the second of three consecutive lefty starters the Mariners will throw at the Oakland Athletics. Oakland is throwing the second of four straight southpaws the Mariners will face. You don't see that very often.
As if on cue, the A's promptly blew their lead in the bottom of the sixth, with Ichiro tying the game on a groundout off reliever Jerry Blevins. Adrian Beltre led off the seventh with a double and scored the go-ahead run on a Jose Lopez single. Jeff Clement then added his second RBI double of the game and before you can say "yowsa!'' the M's are back in front 7-5. What a game.
9:04 p.m.: Well, the M's and A's are showing us why they are among the worst teams in all of baseball. Seattle just gave back four runs in the sixth inning to torch Ryan Feierabend's night and now trail 5-4. Feierabend left with a 4-1 lead after five but Sean Green then hit the first two batters he faced (burnout, anyone?). Rajai David singled to load the bases and Carlos Gonzalez hit into a 4-6 fielder's choice to score a run. Jose Lopez bobbled the ball initially, ensuring he'd notch just the one out at second. But the ball was hit too softly and I don't think he had a shot at the double play. We'll never know.
Daric Barton then blooped a ball to left field, scoring another run. The lead runner, Carlos Gonzalez, took third on the play. Barton moved up to second on the throw. An ensuing single blooped to right by Cliff Pennington, off Cesar Jimenez, brought two runs in to give Oakland the lead and ruin Feierabend's bid for the win.
8:21 p.m.: Seattle has a 4-1 lead heading to the fifth inning after scoring four in the fourth. Oakland had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the frame as Rajai Davis, who came into the game when Jack Cust left suffering from blurred vision, homered to left off Feierabend. That's 13 consecutive games in which the M's have allowed a homer -- first time that's happened since 2005.
But the A's began booting the ball around in the bottom of the frame. After a leadoff walk to Raul Ibanez, Jose Lopez doubled to left center. Ibanez is not the fleetest of foot but was aggressively waved home with none out. The play would have been close, but the ball was dropped by the cutoff man and Ibanez scored Seattle's first run of the series.
Newly-installed second baseman Eric Patterson, replacing the injured Mark Ellis, then bounced a routine throw in the dirt on what should have been a Wladimir Balentien groundout -- putting runners at the corners. Jeff Clement then drove one to the gap in left center for a double that brought both runners home and put Seattle ahead by a pair.
Clement moved to third on a bunt by Bryan LaHair. A's pitcher Gio Gonzalez fielded it and looked to have a shot at third, but took the sure out at first instead. That cost him another run as Miguel Cairo laid a nice suicide squeeze bunt up the third base line to bring in the fourth Seattle marker.
Two of the runs were unearned.
7:57 p.m.: A tough third inning for Feierabend, but he got out of it with no runs allowed in what is still a scoreless game. Feierabend gave up a pair of singles, then hit Emil Brown on a 2-2 pitch to load the bases. Feierabend promptly fell behind 3-0 to Frank Thomas, but fought back with a called strike and a foul ball. He then dropped an inside fastball by Thomas for the called punchout.
Gio Gonzalez of the A's has retired six in a row after walking Ichiro to start the game.
Mark Ellis of the A's left the game in the second inning with right shoulder pain. Jack Cust has also been pulled from the contest, but we don't yet know why.
7:18 p.m.: Frank Thomas nearly homered off Feierabend in the first inning. But the ball hooked just foul. And Feierabend got out of the inning with just an infield single allowed.
