Silva on DL

Posted by Larry Stone

The Mariners placed Carlos Silva on the disabled list after the game with triceps tendinitis in his right elbow. That clears a roster spot for Ryan Feierabend to be activated tomorrow for the start. It was, by the way, finally confirmed that Feierabend really is going to make the start, as everyone has known for a few days. He's apparently in town but stayed back at the hotel.

As for Silva, Riggleman said he had felt some elbow pain in his bullpen session two starts ago, but didn't say anthing until after he got shelled yesterday. The plan is to rest Silva and bring him back in September. I suppose it would be nice for him to finish this season with some positive results to take into next year.

"It's something that I think if we were in a different part of the season, or the standings, he would pitch through it,'' Riggleman said.

Of course, if the Mariners were in a different part of the standings, they might not give someone 4-13, 5.93, an opportunity to pitch through anything. (Oops, I was looking at an old stat sheet. Make that 4-14, 6.36).

Maybe they can keep Silva on the DL until salary insurance kicks in to get back some of the wasted $12m.

Re. the young players now getting time, Clement and LaHair both look to be making adjustments; Reed looks to be pretty much a 4th OF as he has decent speed but no arm and no real power. Balentien needs to spend time with Uncle Lee as he needs to make adjustments to his approach.

I'd like to see Corcoran get some extended 8th inning work - maybe even close when JJ isn't available or if he continues to struggle. Corcoran is definitely more effective now than Green who is looking tired from pitching so much in the first half of the season. Good to see a guy take the bull by the horns when he finally gets a chance.

So, Silva's on the DL and Batista came in today in a relief appearance. I guess it's time to look at all the kids and options for next year.

Once again, something that should have happened two starts ago.

This manhood of pitching with pain (SILVA AND BATISTA) has been a waste.

Batista should have been put on the DL with all the injuries he has been dealing with. Pitching through pain when you are an average pitcher only hurts the team.

We can only hope to keep him there the rest of the year.

Silva got excited about the DL.... he thought it meant "delivered lasagna".

Faceplant should be suspended from the blog for hateful language, 60 days minimum. Poor spelling doesn't excuse abusive language.

Speaking of which, is there a disabled list for team executives? 60 days for foolish manipulation of team food after games, life for failure to build a farm system after 20 years, that sort of thing.

At this point in the season there is no point. The FO has done a tremendous job of fielding a horrible team and setting this organization back many years
but the funny thing is...I don't even give a damn anymore...haven't even watched a game in weeks, who wants to watch this bushleague craptastic Mariners anyway...what a waste of a summer....

You know what, for some reason I'm thinking about that scene in "Victory" where they break the goalkeeper's arm with a hammer so that Stallone can play goalie. What sort of tool would one use to pull someone's tricep?

This is very bad news. We need both Silva AND Batista in the starting rotation. Cross you fingers.

Exactly right Strasburg Watch, Silva and Batista should be starting every fourth day and Felix every sixth day. In this way, we might compete for the prize,

Anyone for resigning Richie, Pepe and Jose? There can be no substitute for the worst record.

Dang,,, Silva on DL with elbow soreness. What do you expect when four of the Starters can't hit .200, and Kenji regularly throws a ball or two into Center Field on purpose.

Man, that guy needs to go to rehab, bad. Last years Steroids completely ruined his head.

This is horrible news. Perhaps now we'll win a few games, taking us out of dead last and eliminating us from the Steven Strasburg sweepstakes next June. May as well put Batista back in the rotation.

Silva and Bedard can play ping pong in the clubhouse until it's time to go home.

Can't wait till next season when Silva, Bedard, Batista and Washburn all return. The MOJO is already rising!

I don't always agree with Faceplant, but the individual posting under his name in this thread is not the original Faceplant, guaranteed. It's time for the webmaster to bust some of these juveniles who pull the name-stealing stunt over and over again.

This incredibly bad season is forcing self-examination on the M's. One of the things I hope they're learning is not to use up Sean Green in the first four months. (Two years in a row now, apparently.) I'm not sure what the lesson on Jimenez is, but I'm not encouraged.

It is now obvious that several pitchers have been disabled all season - even though not on the official list.

I'm not sure what the lesson on Jimenez is, but I'm not encouraged.

The lesson with Jiménez is simple. Caesar does not belong with the big team, except maybe to throw batting practice. How many hits do we have to watch him give up hits in key situations as a middle inning reliever for the M's to know this? Yesterday, Jimenez cost the M's the game. He gave up two hits in a row to relinquish the lead. How demoralizing is it for the M's to see a great six run rally, only to have this guy tank?

On the other hand, if Stasburg takes Jiménez's roster spot in 2009, all will be well with the world again!

A few years ago, a pitcher was put on the DL with the reason being given "inability to pitch". Maybe both Buffet Silva and Batista can be put on the DL for all of 2009 for this reason and the team can collect salary insurance to recoup some of the $20m tied up with these two losers.

If you have to make up another reason, maybe tendinitus in the fingers for Batista from playing the saxophone too often and a groin pull for Silva pushing away from the post-game buffet table.

There's a rumor going around that Silva is having surgery. 1) To have his foot extracted from his mouth, and 2) To have band put in his stomach.

I just watched Strassburg on the NBC olympics web site and this kid is indeed good. The scouting reports I read is 98 mph fastball,
command all his pitches, slider, fastball, change-up. His mechanics look very workable as he drops his shoulder a bit too low in his motion.

As long as Riggleman is the field manager and keeps platooning Miguel Cairo at first, and keeps unlucky Beltre in the middle of the order, we have shot at nabbing Strasburg.

And the 5:46 post isn't from me either. Seriously is it that hard to ban people?

I think Strasburg shouldn't even CONSIDER Seattle. For, if he joins the team, his ERA will skyrocket, he'll have long innings and be totally ineffective. It's the Seattle Way.
