Mariners at Los Angeles Angels: 08/13 game thread

Raul Ibanez just tagged Ervin Santana for a solo homer to lead off the sixth, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Was this Ibanez's parting shot as a Mariner?

Felix Hernandez has gotten through the past two innings rather easily and is one frame away from a "quality start" beginning the sixth at 79 pitches.

By the way, R.A. Dickey is likely out of the rotation the rest of the season. He's been scratched from Sunday's scheduled start. The M's are remaining mum on who will replace him. My guess is Ryan Feierabend will be called up from Class AAA. Miguel Batista is sore, so it won't be him. It won't be Jake Woods, who the M's consider strictly bullpen material. And manager Jim Riggleman says the team wants to look at some more guys before the season ends.

Sounds like Feierabend to me. By the way, to answer cesame in the comments thread, Feierabend threw only 2 1/3 innings and 53 pitches tonight. Then, he was pulled early. It was like a bullpen session. He can go again on Sunday.

Below, a shot of Dickey, telling it all to good buddy Mark Teixeira.

7:59 p.m.: Felix Hernandez just served up a two-run homer to Mark Teixeira (pictured above) in the third inning and trails 3-1. It was Teixeira's third long ball since coming over from Atlanta in that trade deadline deal. He's really transformed this Angels offense. One reason Seattle began tonight 30 1/2 games out of first place. The other reason? The M's stink.

Now that we've got that out of the way, Hernandez's line drive and flyball rate must be taking a beating tonight. He's allowed eight baserunners in three innings. No signs of the economical pitcher from last week. Time to give up on him? Nah, didn't think so. It's only one outing. Besides, he's only three innings away from a "quality start". And, as Resin mentioned in the comments thread, he did pitch out of further trouble in that first inning.

7:28 p.m.: We're tied 1-1 heading to the second inning. Seattle opened the scoring off Ervin Santana, with Jeremy Reed doubling and then scoring on a two-out single by Adrian Beltre.

But the Angels tied it up on consecutive singles by Maicer Izturis, Mark Teixeira and Vladimir Guerrero. An error and a walk loaded the bases with one out, but Felix Hernandez escaped the jam on a 4-6-3 double-play grounder by Garret Anderson.

Geoff, maybe its Ryan F up for Washburn who has been claimed off waivers. Surely the M's management will not take him off waivers

I hope F-bend comes up. He's proabably better than Wash now, and he's free, and he will get better.
As for Raul, they better get a slam dunk knock your eyes out deal for him. He is the best position guy we have, and could be part of the foundation of a great team, as DH. If they don't, man oh man.
As for Wash, I hope he's gone and I hope the Yanks don't get him. Be nice to get a AAA guy for him that's good. I'm a Rainers fan. If not, who cares, he's always better than his record, but his record always sucks.
Continued thanks for the great blog Geoff. Even though you seem to get more days off than I do.

Reed is not the answer in center field.

I wonder if Felix has a dead arm, his velocity was lower than normal tonight.

Another "bad-luck" would-had-been-ball-4 pop up by Beltre.

Oh my God Lopez, lose some weight or something. Your range is beyond terrible.

The only reason I don't want to can Jose's ass is because the M's challenged him in the off-season to get his crap together and he met their challenge and is having a fairly good season. Nothing ming blowing, but certainly I'd say he has done everything the M's have asked him to do up to this point.

Now they need to drive defense into his brain and see how he reacts. He reacted well to the first challenge, let's see is he can do it again. It needs to be corrected though because this is just unacceptable.

Btw I was referring to the ball Kendrick hit that Lopez horribly mis-played.

Move Lopez to second and Yuni to second. Trade Beltre in the winter. Kill 2 birds with one stone.

Ichiro being Ichiro.

Then who plays short? Is anyone ML ready in the farm system? Triunfel is the only big SS prospect I know of. Do we have anyone else?

Lets see...The M's would waive Washburn and eat his salary for this year and the $9 million for next year. Chopper...why would the M's just eat his salary all of a sudden? Is this the kind of fans we have?

The Great Angels put FRod in for that stupid cheapo one out save last night then he comes in and gags tonight. First of all, bring Morrow back, JJ is history. Eddie Guadardo light.

I would say Putts is the worst closer in baseball, but thats not true. He is NOT a closer...he is an OPENER. He just opens the door for the other team. I can't remember a professional, in any sport falling faster than he has.....he is a real complete dud.

Jesus you guys are a bunch of whiners. Who in the hell cares? It's a lost season. He's had injury issues all year. Give the man a break.

Oh, and to the person that suggest we bring Morrow back. Shut up. He needs to be in the minors working becoming a starter. A position that is MUCH more important than a closer.

Is anyone surprised to see JJ struggle and blow saves anymore? He has no control on his splitter and looks to have lost his confidence. Hitters just tee off on his fastball these days. Other guys in the bp like Lowe & Jimenez are not effective in tight situations. This organization will need to make a determination on what role Morrow will have in the future - personally, I think he could be a Papelbon-type closer and he'll have a longer career. It's just too demoralizing to keep losing games because of an ineffective closer.

About closing duties... we also have Josh Fields as soon as he signs. He can step in and be ready for next year.

Capt Poopy: You must not have been around to remember the days of Bobby Ayala & Slocumb where no lead was ever safe in the 9th inning. Puts tremendous pressure on your hitters to know that they need to keep playing add-on as no amount of runs is enough. Maybe Josh Fields could be the long-term answer but this organization needs to get him signed first. I think an effective closer is much more important than a #3 sp which is what Morrow will probably be.

Top Pick in 09...

I definitely remember those days, but Putz isn't done though. And yes, a number 3 pitcher is much more valuable than a closer.
