Detroit Tigers at Mariners: 07/03 game thread

8:56 p.m.: Add on another Detroit run as rookie Michael Holliman takes new pitcher Mark Lowe deep to right center on an 0-1 offering in the sixth to make it a 6-2 game. Holliman's first career homer. Been that kind of year in the Emerald City. A lot of firsts. Not too many of them good for the home nine.

Had a chance to go on the Detroit FSN pre-game show down on the field earlier this evening. Have done stuff like that a few times and let me tell you, the atmosphere down there is much different just before a game than when we usually go on during batting practice. Had my trusty camera with me and snapped some photos just before heading on with the host, who you'll see below (guy on left).

Down below, a shot up at the press box from my position just next to the visitors' dugout.

8:39 p.m.: The roof has started to cave in on the Mariners and Carlos Silva, with the Tigers leading 5-2 as we head to the bottom of the fifth. Detroit scored a run in the fourth to tie it as Matt Joyce doubled to right and later scored on a two-out single to center by Ivan Rodriguez.

The Tigers added three more runs in the fifth to take the lead. Curtis Granderson led things off with a triple to left center. If you've never seen Granderson leg out a triple, it's one of the most beautiful things to watch in baseball. He's a natural. You knew it was a three-bagger the moment he neared first base. Guy has afterburners like few I've ever seen. One out later, Granderson beat a throw to the plate by Jose Lopez on a fielder's choice. Pure speed there. Miguel Cabrera, Matt Joyce and Gary Sheffield then notched consecutive singles to add two more runs.

The Mariners have left seven men on in the first four innings. Think they aren't regretting it?

8:05 p.m.: Lots happening in the third inning as the Mariners now have a 2-1 lead. Detroit tied the game 1-1 in the top of the frame on three straight singles by Michael Holliman, Curtis Granderson and Placido Polanco. But a 4-6-3 double play ball by Carlos Guillen got Carlos Silva out of further trouble.

Seattle then regained the lead as Jose Lopez led off with a double to left. One out later, Lopez scored on a Jose Vidro single. Adrian Beltre also singled to put two on with one out. Jeremy Reed then hit into a fielder's choice to leave runners at the corners with two out, but Richie Sexson grounded out to the pitcher and generated more boos. That's five runners LOB in two ABs for Sexson tonight.

7:27 p.m.: Seattle has a 1-0 lead after an inning of play as Ichiro led off with a single in the bottom of the first. Tigers starter Justin Verlander then threw over to the bag, but the toss was wild and Ichiro wound up at third by the time the ball was retrieved. Jose Lopez drove him home with a hard single to left and Raul Ibanez walked to put two on with none out. But the M's faltered from there as Jose Vidro flied out to left and Adrian Beltre struck out. Verlander then walked Jeremy Reed, earning him a visit from Detroit pitching coach Chuck Hernandez. But Verlander retired Richie Sexson on a first-pitch groundout to third. Cue the booing.

So, a 1-0 lead but a wasted opportunity in a 25-pitch inning for Verlander.

Carlos Silva survived a one-out walk in the top of the first and got flyball outs on Carlos Guillen (with the count 2-0) and Miguel Cabrera to end the frame.

Is Clement Struggling that much as you make it out to be?

If you remove the games where he DH'd since being called what are his stats then? You should know since your using a small sample size.

As the starting catcher for the Mariners since being called up Clement has actually been pretty decent for the ridiculously small sample size you want to use.

.250 BA / .428 OBP / .500 SLG / .928 OPS
All 7 of hits, 1 Double, 2 Homeruns and 7 Strikeouts

The real question should have been is does the coching staff see a night and day difference in Clement's performance at the plate when he is the DH versus him as a catcher?

Silva unlikely to go 5 again is going to tax our ball pen again, just when we can least afford it. He just isn't pulling his weight (pardon the pun).

I've noticed this year that all the "promo commercials" featuring Mariners players are lackluster, rather dumb, and definitely not funny to any small degree whatsoever. As go the commercials, so goes the season. Detroit was just too much for the M's tonite. And a blown Ump-Call at the plate, too. Sometimes I think Umps Have Too Much Power.
