Sexson sits again Sunday

Posted by Danny O'Neil

Richie Sexson is out of the lineup for the fifth consecutive game, replaced by Miguel Cairo, who's batting eighth in the order.

Manager John McLaren addressed the situation at first base when he met with reporters before the game and said the recent shift in playing time at the position has more to do with Cairo's performance than Sexson's lack thereof. You can listen to McLaren's explanation in an mp3 file linked right here. Or you can read on for a summary of the most pertinent quotes.

"We've put Cairo out there and to be honest, he's energized us," McLaren said. "He's given us great defense. He's given us a different look, gives us some speed, contact hitter and we've played pretty good. So in the situation we're in, I'm not going to change it. We're starting to play good. Again, it's about Miguel, it's not about Richie."

Sexson was in the clubhouse before the game, but declined to talk about his recent absence from the lineup.

McLaren said he and Sexson have talked.

"He's got pride," McLaren said. "He wants to do well, and he knows he's struggled and it's not an easy situation for him. It's not an easy situation for myself, but first and foremost, in which always will be No. 1 is the team. That's where we are."

Does Sexson understand that?

"I presume he does," McLaren said. We've spoken ... and I've told him how I feel about it and how I feel about him. I've tried to support Richie as much as anybody. I believe in Richie, he's working hard at it behind the scenes with Pent [hitting coach Jeff Pentland]. I'm sure he's anxious to get back out there. He can't do anything sitting on the bench, but I've told you the reasons why he's not out there."

McLaren indicated that the move to Cairo was not permanent and that eventually Sexson will return to the position.

"As long as we're running a little streak here, I'm going to go with the hot hand," McLaren said. "We know he's going to be back out there, it's just a matter of when."

How embarrassing... benched for a guy who cant hit a lick... Cairo is a pathetic hitter, even worse than Sexson..

McLaren is lost though.. he thinks that our recent 3 out of 4 streak actually has something to do with Miguel Cairo..

"He's energized us"... Be quiet.. no he hasnt..

We've gotten 2 absolute gems from Bedard and Felix.. and a very good outing by Batista vs Boston.. that is why we've won a few games here..

It has nothing to do with Cairo.. and it's silly McLaren thinks he's like a good luck charm or something.. the guy is hitting like .180 with no power..

If McLaren had a brain, he'd just wise up and play Sexson.. but bat him 8th, as opposed to force feeding him into the middle of the order

Any truth to the rumor that Bavasi is working out a trade with the WNBA Storm involving Sexson.

Maybe, just maybe the M's might (but doubtful) turn this thing around like the '05 Astro's did - per Larry Stone's article. However I'd rather see Clement's bat in the lineup versus Cairo's.

Are we supposed to take McLaren seriously? Is he just spouting platitudes to keep players happy, reporters at bay, or does he really believe what he's saying?

Btw, Clement has a higher OBP and SLG % than Cairo with Cairo only having one more AB than Clement. Yet since Cairo is a veteran he gets more ABs because, well, he's a veteran and he's providing a "spark" to the team, and Clement is just struggling and isn't seasoned enough.

This is the kind of thinking that doesn't fly anymore. Clement has a chance and most likely would improve on those numbers. Cairo is what Cairo is: garbage.

FIRE PEOPLE NOW.

Yeah....that .204 avg with no power is energizing the team........"Seattle Mariner Baseball....For Idiots, By Idiots".

Good luck M's, I"ve decided to stop supporting the team with my money until there are wholesale changes. I'll watch the games on TV, follow the blog, but decided against a trip to Seattle and san Diego to see the M's play.

Every word that comes out of bozo M's manager
"McLosin" further vindicates my decision to give up my $4000 season tickets until Bavasi and McLosin are FIRED!!!

I hate to root for losses, but nothing except the unmitigated disaster of a 100+ loss season will flush Boovasi and McLosin out of Seattle.

Replacing upChuck Armstrong and Howie Lincolnlog with LEGITIMATE baseball executives would be a good move too.

I think the one "problem" with Clement playing 1st is that he doesn't want to play that position. He views himself as our catcher of the future (rightly so!). Let's hope the kenji resigning was so he would be better trade bait (kinda doubt it unless we eat part of the contract dollars).

Is Cairo playing good defense? I wouldn't know was I only follow the game on yahoo (don't live in the PNW). Some trades and cuts are needed. Have we no 1st basement in AAA that could be brought up to start taking reps?

Trade Kenji for Junior
Cut Sexson
Move Morrow to a starting roll
Play Reed more
And if Cairo plays great defense then fine, keep him at first and we'll suck up his .204 BA - it sure beats what Sexson offers. I mean hey, at least we don't expect ton of of Cairo.

Oh... and what's what Beltre swinging for the fences and finding it?

At least with Cairo we get some solid defense. Clement had struck out 23 times in 64 AB's, he needed to go back down to get his head straight.

It's no surprise that they are playing better without Sexson.

Despite his power, he kept coming up in important situation and struck out.

As I have said repeatedly, he is like Dave Kingman.

At least Cairo can make contact, but they need a power lefty to play first, as they are lacking in power already.

Good to see Batista coming around. He is a good #5, but has not been healthy. He battles and that is something the M's need more of.

There's something to be said for making contact. Cairo is certainly not going to wow anyone at the plate, but he is working counts, and advancing runners. I'd rather have the ball put into play to make the defense work over a strikeout any day of the week.

I can't believe the negativity sometimes. Mind blowing. Enjoy watching the games or don't watch. What's complaining going to do? This isn't the Sounders FC - the shareholders/fans don't get to oust the GM!!

The M's have been playing much better ball since Cairo was inserted in the lineup over Sexson. I don't see Sexson playing for Cairo for two reasons. (1) Baseball players/coaches are among the most superstitious of any athletes. You don't mess with a hot-streak (or in this case, a "luke-warm" streak...gotta take what we can get!). And (2), benching Sexson sends notice to the rest of the team that they're gonna be held accountable. I guarantee you it is lighting a fire under a few of the other teammates seeing their high-paid and woefully unproductive teammate riding the pine. And...it seems to be working. So, I applaud McLaren for doing it.

And, of course McLaren is going to play the "PR" card during interviews about Sexson. That's part of his role as manager is managing the public views of the ball club. Keeping the players happy. Putting them in the best possible spot to win some games. He's trying to stay positive. It's his approach. It's who he is. It doesn't jive with the cynics out there, but it's take it or leave it. Don't bad mouth the guy for being who he is. Geez louise.

Go M's!

Doug

I am just curious, what is "revionist history" ?

and what exactly does this word mean "lozerz"
were you trying to spell the word losers?
I am just curious because I would assume that someone who is calling others " lozerz" would at least be able to spell better than a 3rd grade level.
Or maybe Doug, you are the LOSER?

Making contact isn't all that helpful if the contact doesn't result in a hit. Miguel Cairo is hitting, so what exactly is the big value we're getting from his contact? A couple more people advance on out? A few more double plays against us?

A manager who wasn't useless would put Ibanez at first and Reed in left, which would upgrade our defense at a more important position, and Reed's bat is better than Cairos. Then we could dump Cairo and pick up a pinch hitter somewhere. All this is stating what should be the obvious.

Frankly, if McLaren can't tell what is helping the team win and what isn't, he ought to be fired just for that.

Wow. A whole 16 minutes before the "glass is half-empty" counter-argument.

And since when is LF more important than 1B? I'm pretty certain 1B records quite a few more outs than LF in the course of a game.

M's 8th Inning w/ Richie Sexson:

Reed singles to LF. Advances to 2B on fielding error by M. Ordonez
Sexson strikes out.
Betancourt lines out to third.
Suzuki intentionally walked.

M's 8th inning w/ Miguel Cairo:

Reed singles to LF. Advances to 2B on fielding error by M. Ordonez
Reed advances to third on .
Betancourt lines out to third.
Suzuki intentionally walked.

Oh never mind!!

That didn't work out like I wanted!!

In fact, maybe the liner by Betancourt goes for a hit without the third baseman holding Reed at the bag.

Grumble.

Can't help what happened to Betancourt.

They played it the right way and Cairo did his job. Sexson has let the team down so many times.

That said, they need some left handed power at first if they intend to be more competitive.

Watching Carlos Guillen at the plate, he would be a good fit at first, despite his lack of overall power.

I was disappointed they never got Delgado.

This is what I do not understand. Why didn't they bring Morrow back out for the 9th, especially when the score is still tied? If we had taken the lead, then I understand brining Putz in. But, if it is still tied, you know Morrow still has alot left since he did not throw many pitches.....why make the change?

They didn't bring Morrow back because we don't have a manager that knows how to manage a game. Simple!

4:07 PM, Jun 01, 2008

replacing Putz with Rhodes (no offense AR) is really embarrassing.

4:09 PM, Jun 01, 2008

I mean, I do not want to knock Mac, but even I know, the wise thing to do is bring Morrow back in. The game has/had a good chance to go into extra innings, and the way this team has had issues scoring consistently, you cannot count they will score.

Bring in Morrow, save JJ. Simple as that.

McLaren says "It's not an easy situation for myself..." . Just tells you he has no balls and is not manager material. No real manager says that kind of thing.

5:44 PM, Jun 01, 2008

It is just like the Mariners to screw up potential prospects by playing them in positions other than the ones they should. Don't expect Clement to be very good...for the Mariners.

Bring him up and let him play catcher the rest of the season to see if he is the real thing or not. Who cares about whiny Washburn, the season is over and so should Washburn as a Mariner. I can't stand McLaren because he is in love with the veterans and does not want to hurt their feelings. Not every one is Jay Bruce, give Clement time.

I understand the attempt by Mac to get a spark and play the hot hand..but you have 15 Million a year on the bench? Perhaps it's a wake up call, not a spark. Jeremy Reed has been a spark, the kid plays hard. The M's need more of that - more accountability and heart, that's the only way this thing will get turned around.

If this season is a lost cause, and it's looking more and more like it every single day - then, play the young guys. Put Clement at First, Reed in Left, Wlad in Right, and Raul at DH. It makes sense. Vidro hitting .240 at the DH spot is unacceptable.
