Jeremy Reed practices at first base

Posted by Danny O'Neil

Jeremy Reed worked out at first base on Saturday afternoon before batting practice, something manager John McLaren said was done with an eye toward inter-league play in a National League park when the Mariners will be without a designated hitter.

Reed at 1B? Turn one of the club's better defensive outfielders into a 1B?

I just don't get this team.

"Beltre fly ball to left field and not deep enough," Dave Niehaus - clearly not a line drive, so that is 2 for 10 in last four games with no line drives. How that LD% now?

Sitting pretty at 20.7%

Suspect McLaren is thinking of using Reed as a left handed pinch hitter in late innings for Big K.

But it still does not make a lot of sense.

Someone must be giving Beltre credit for line outs with such a LD% rate, he hasn't hit one in ten at bats. Suspect statistics.

Um,

Are they getting Raul any work at 1B? Because, seriously - if the M's take the field in any inning with Reed at first and Raul in LF, this blog will explode.

He sure hit that fly ball at someone - position perfectly - to give him bad luck.

Does anyone know anything about Dallas Braden of Sacramento? He’s struck out 7 of the first 9 hitters Tacoma has sent to the plate.

Especially considering the teams worst defensive outfielder has played 1st base in the past, and Reed (one of the teams better defensive outfielders) hasn't.

This team brings dumb to a whole new level.

"Sitting pretty at 20.7%"

It's pointless BrianL. They don't know what his LD% tells you, and they aren't the slightest bit interested in finding it out what it's uses are. All they know is that it's an advanced statistic, and that advanced statistics are bad.

This team is just so frustrating and what is the long-term thinking? Raul, with his limited range, should be moved to first base when Big K is finally dumped and Reed, the much better OF, should then take over in left on a daily basis while Balentien gets regular playing time in right to see if he can handle the job. Grandpa Mac, as usual, is afraid to ruffle Raul's feelings by making this switch. If Raul doesn't want to play first base or DH on a regular basis, then he is valuable trade bait at the deadline.

Oh - BTW - Just watched Josh Fields close the game for UGA vs. Miami. For what it's worth, he hit 98 mph and showed a big curve. Seemed to be a little bit wild around the zone, but he overpowered the Miami hitters including Jemile Weeks.

If defenses could predict where a player was going to hit the ball in advance, we wouldn't really even need to play the game would we?

Players can't control where the ball goes once it's hit, and if you think they can you've never picked up a bat.

"Someone must be giving Beltre credit for line outs with such a LD% rate, he hasn't hit one in ten at bats. Suspect statistics."

LD% does count lineouts. And because Beltre hasn't hit a line drive (by your analysis) in 10 AB's doesn't mean he hasn't had a 20% LD rate. If you want to argue over the analytical value of 10 AB's then be my guest.

You saberdorks will twist any argument, for the past week you guys have been telling me that the defense is positioning itself perfectly to put out AB's hard hit line drives, which have proved to be nothing of the sort for five games now. Your sabermetric brethren have offered otherwise Buttplant, they say you can predict hitting tendencies and place outfielders accordingly to give dorks like Beltre bad luck. At least that is what they have been saying for a week now. So once again Faceplant you mis-represent the argument and offer your petty pedestrian rebuttal.

Yeah, I'm also lost on what the thinking is. Clement is still catching at Tacoma, nobody ever talks about the giving the 1B there a shot, and meanwhile Reed gets practice at first.

Nobody nationally thinks McLaren or Bavasi are coming back next year, no one locally thinks it, and if you are going to rebuild you don't want the people to made the mistakes that require it making the decisions this summer.

Somebody in the M's organization needs to wake up.

Lets lower our Players value even more...how about Ibanez at 1B? Hmmmmmmm? What about Ibanez as Dh? What about that?

Fan next to me: He swings and misses at a pitch low and away.

This is outright idiocy. Of all the guys in the OF that should be practing with the 1B mitt; it's Ibanez. It's so absurd, that Ibanez himself should step up and bite the bullet. A team leader has really got to put the team in front of his own desire. It's not like he's keeping his value up for a big contract payday; the next contract he signs will be with the understanding that it will be his last. He needs to stop this lunacy now.

Geoff, can you please, please, please, at the next after-game press conference, give us a "we're mad as hell and we're not gonna take it anymore" moment? I'm sure the M's blogosphere will froth at the news, but no one will "take it to the street" so to say and take their discontent right to the face of M's players/staff/front office.

Ibanez hypothetical outfield D has yet to directly cause a loss. you fags and the USSM groupthink tend to believe he is the cause of the teams problems. They forget they lobbied for corey patterson lol

No they haven't. It's the people like Mr. X that have been saying this. Who's twisting the arguments again?

"So once again Faceplant you mis-represent the argument and offer your petty pedestrian rebuttal."

Players cannot positition themselves to be right in front of a ball before it's hit. Nobody knows where it's going. Hitters may have pull tendencys that you can exploit by shifting the defense, but any instance of a ball going right at someone is pure luck, or bad luck depending on which side of the ball you are on.

Spare me your "superior intellect". Nobody cares how many big words you can write.
