Creative M's lineup

Posted by Larry Stone

Jim Riggleman will trot out one of the more, uh, interesting lineups of the year to face tough Tim Hudson:

Ichiro RF

Willie Bloomquist 2B

Raul Ibanez LF

Jose Vidro 1B

Jeremy Reed CF

Yuniesky Betancourt SS

Jeff Clement C

Miguel Cairo 3B

Carlos Silva P

****
Adrian Beltre is still bothered by his sore left index finger, even though it's improving. Jose Lopez is just getting a day off. So is Richie Sexson (hold your jokes). I think I'm going to revive my "reverse lock" theory of a couple of weeks ago and call another Mariners' victory, because this lineup shouldn't have a prayer against Hudson.

A couple other tidbits from pre-game session with Riggleman: He still doesn't know if Erik Bedard (back spasms) can make Wednesday's start against the Mets, but if he can't, Miguel Batista would probably sub. Batista might pitch Tuesday and R.A. Dickey on Wednesday. Riggleman also said that when Brandon Morrow is fully recovered, Batista is likely to go back in the rotation, with Dickey returning to the bullpen.

Well, at least we can say Riggs isn't reticent to change.

Looks to be basically a AAAA lineup in the field today but at least Reed is now getting a chance to play regularly - something that wouldn't have happened under Grandpa Mac. Mac's lack of discipline on the team is similar to the hands-off approach of Bill Doba except for players getting into legal difficulties - just the culture of players being able to do whatever they please since they are professionals. Riggleman & Pelekoudas both will be good caretakers for the remainder of this train wreck and good to see Larry Stone's article today where some good GM candidates will definitely have interest in this job. I just hope the team can be ready to compete again by 2010 following Bonehead Bill's wrecking of the franchise. BB's baseball career will now take him full circle back to being a groundskeeper again which is how he got started.

What is the point of sending out Vidro, Sexson, Ibanez (to left field). At least Riggleman is playing Clement and Wlad and Reed. They should bri ng up young players or trade for some young players who are on the fence with potential. Stop wasting playing time with these regulars who will be gone soon.

Larry: Nice article on the GM and manager situation.

Two key points: 1. "Hargrove left for a reason." 2. "The dynamic with the CEO [Howard Lincoln] might be an issue. I've found the single greatest impediment to winning is the ownership dynamic."

You listening Howie. Look at how the Orioles have turned it around since Angelos got out of the the way.

Damnit, I sure hope this day off don't cool down Big Dick's bat. This looks like a Spring Training lineup, B squad. Somewhere not so far away, I hear Taps playing...

This line up suggests a small ball strategy - which is good basic baseball - to use what assets you have to manufacture runs. Which is what we need desperately! It also uses the bench to keep the players ready to contribute. The whole day after a night game rotation. Cross my fingers and hope that a new attitude develops!

I wonder how many of those in the line up will be here after the trade deadline? I think that the fire sale will begin soon.

Most of today's lineup consisted of players who at least care about winning, Betancourt excepted. For some reason it has a Spokane Indians feel to it. Silva is the only player who blasted other's for not trying. It seems karma nipped him in the butt.

At least Carlos Siva cares.Who know`s what`s really going on in that clubhouse. The thing we know for sure it is not a cohesive, spirited team and that has to change.I would start watching games again if I saw that no matter what the win/loss columm look`s like.

If the ballclub is going to rebuild with kids, I sure hope management can sort out the current guys the young players do not need to emulate. Like Chris says, who knows what goes on in the clubhouse... I think that what happens in there is something Riggleman and Lee P. need to get a good handle on. Anyway, I think it might be good to keep a couple of good "character guy" types around to help with promoting as positive an attitude as possible for young players.
