8:35 p.m.: Seattle scored a pair in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead and chase Cha Seung Baek from the game. I didn't think Baek pitched all that poorly. He was victimized by some cheap hits -- other than the back-toback doubles -- and shoddy defense behind him. The M's loaded the bases with none out on an infield hit by Jose Lopez, a single up the middle by Raul Ibanez and a walk to Jose Vidro. Adrian Beltre then collected his second infield single of the night to drive in a run. That was it for Baek, who left after five-plus innings and 83 pitches.

Bryan Corey came on and got a fielder's choice groundout -- shortstop to home -- on Jeremy Reed for the first out. Jeff Clement then hit a bullet to shallow center that knocked Jody Gerut off his feet as he caught it. Vidro alertly tagged up and scored.

Remember, Carlos Silva hasn't won a game since April 17 in Oakland. Baek still had five weeks to go in his M's career. Clement was nearly two weeks away from being called up for the first time. If Silva blows this game, he has only himself to blame.

7:52 p.m.: Carlos Silva just got spotted a 2-0 lead in the fourth, courtesy of back-to-back doubles from Adrian Beltre and Jeremy Reed. Both balls were hit very hard, Beltre's to the left field corner and Reed's off the right field wall. Both came with two out after it looked like another leadoff runner reaching base for the M's would be wasted. Jose Lopez led off the inning with a single, but Raul Ibanez flied out to shallow right and Jose Vidro struck out. But Loepz stole second and scored on the double to get Seattle on the board.

7:43 p.m.: Three innings in the books here and still no score. The Mariners have managed to squander a boatload of opportunities despite not yet managing to hit the ball out of the infield. They put two on in the second inning against ex-teammate Cha Seung Baek on an error and an infield single by Adrian Beltre. That was with nobody out. But then Jeremy Reed chopped into a fielder's choice, leaving runners at the corners. Jeff Clement then popped out and Reed got himself caught in a rundown leaning too far off first base. Jose Vidro was eventually tagged out between third and home as he inched his way towards the plate trying to score. But that was Reed's fault. Not Vidro's.

Carlos Silva then muffed a bunt attempt in the third inning after a leadoff single by Yuniesky Betancourt. The bunt bounced right to charging first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who began a 3-6-4 double play. Ichiro then struck out on a checked swing. He didn't like the call.

Silva has allowed a lone single through his first three innings. He retired his first seven batters in a row.

6:56 p.m.: A group of Mariners, above, play with a dog down on the field pre-game. Insert your own punch line.

Spoke to J.J. Putz earlier after he played catch on flat ground. It turns out though, that this wasn't Putz's first attempt at throwing. He apparently tried to do it last weekend in Atlanta -- before the Saturday game -- and wound up with another sore arm.

But here's the reason.

Putz was apparently told something about needing to get better arm extension when he threw. But he misunderstood what he was told. Apparently, he was only supposed to get the extension by throwing in a loose, natural way.

To hear Putz tell it, though, he thought it meant he had to twist his arm in a different fashion.

He says he went out there "trying to snap it'' when he threw and the result was that "it got sore again.''

That's great. Anyhow, that was a week ago and Putz is finally back to playing catch again. Don't expect him to get on a regimented throwing program for at least another week. Mariners manager Jim Riggleman said today that Putz will likely not be throwing in the ninth inning when he comes back, or goes on a rehabilitation stint, or whatever. He'll have to work his way back to that. Once he gets to the majors, he'll have to show he can work multiple days in a row before getting the closer job back.

Felix Hernandez is now not going to pitch until at least Wednesday. Probably not until after that. The team had said last night that he would go on Tuesday. But they're being cautious with him. No word yet on whether Miguel Batista will go either.

By the way, Richie Sexson is out tonight. Jose Vidro is at first base, batting clean-up.
