Erik Bedard: Frugal with his answers

Posted by Danny O'Neil

"He was dealing tonight," manager John McLaren said of his starter Erik Bedard. No argument there. He struck out a season-high 10, had two different stretches in which he retired seven in a row and didn't allow a hit in the final four innings he pitched.

How'd he do it in the same week that he lasted only two innings on the mound in Texas? Well, if something changed, he wasn't real forthcoming with that. Here's the transcript of his interview. As you can see by the length, it didn't take a whole lot of time to compile:

[Author's note: These were not compiled with any sort of passive-aggressive swipe at Bedard. This was the first time this specific reporter was ever involved in an interview with Bedard. It's his prerogative how to answer questions. I thought people would be interested in his answers and that's the only reason I posted them. -- Danny O'Neil.]

Q: What was your approach to the game tonight? The Padres were complimenting you before the game on your aggressiveness.

Bedard: Just trying to throw strikes.

Q: Ten [strikeouts] tonight.

Bedard: Yeah. It doesn’t matter. As long as we get the win at the end of the game, that’s all that matters.

Q: Double digits, though, you have to feel a little bit good about that. Give yourself a little credit.

Bedard: Not really.

Q: You had trouble getting into a rhythm in Texas. Were you able to get into that rhythm tonight?

Bedard: Just trying to throw strikes and get ahead and get ‘em off balance.

Q: More movement on your fastball this game?

Bedard: The same. Same as usual.

Q: Any pitch that was more effective tonight?

Bedard: (Shakes his head).

--- End of transcript ---

Not real compelling stuff there. In absence of insight from the man himself, we'll turn to the player who caught his pitches on Saturday night, catcher Jamie Burke:

"His ball was cutting a little bit more tonight," Burke said. "He just had some good movement on his fastball today and that was a key for him and obviously being able to throw the curveball for strikes and then getting it down when he needed to."

OK. That helps us understand just how Bedard was so effective.

He answered all of your questions, so what if he is boring. He pitched a hell of a game.

The guys at USSMariner are right, those are lousy questions. I don't expect a player to have anything interesting to say asking such dead ended questions.

Yeah, right...Erik Bedard's short answers are a problem....

Reporters ask questions, that's their job. Their job is not to answer them too.

Start dealing with why McLaren is an awful manager and stop the passive-aggressive swipes at Bedard.

I love it.

EB only cares about winning the game. He doesn't get caught up in the glamour or hype that so many other elite sports stars do.

That kind of player should be every fans dream.

A wins a win and he is on my fantasy team so welcome back Erik!

Geoff, is that really you writing this instead?

Look, you guys say that Bedard has to step it up. So he steps it up, with ten strike outs at that, and to top it off the Ms actually win a game.

So instead of praising Bedard for doing well, you guys want to make sour grapes of him not answering a bunch of ho-hum questions.

Seriously, quit beating a dead horse, quit paying attention to the idiotic comments, and start answering some real questions starting with the Mariners brass.

Bedard is a riot!
He's has to be frustrating as all hell to a reporter but since we as fans aren't reporters, we couldn't care less if he's indepth with you guys or not.

He actually reminds more of a normal guy thrust into spotlight he doesn't want. I can identify with him moreso than with any of these other PR trained athletes.

Keep making those reporters earn their money Erik!

I'm going to say the reason for himn getting into a rythm tonight was the fact the Burke was catching him. Sometimes certain pitchers and caters work well together.

Q: What was your approach to the game tonight? The Padres were complimenting you before the game on your aggressiveness.

Bedard: Just trying to throw strikes.

Q: Is there ever a game when you're not trying to throw strikes?
Q: Any particular kind of strike? After all, a belt-high fastball is a strike, but not a particularly productive kind.

Q: You had trouble getting into a rhythm in Texas. Were you able to get into that rhythm tonight?

Bedard: Just trying to throw strikes and get ahead and get 'em off balance.

Q: What kind of strike did you find kept the Padres hitters off balance tonight?
Q: What made you more successful at getting 'em off balance tonight than last time you pitched?

Q: More movement on your fastball this game?

Bedard: The same. Same as usual.

Q: But, the results were so much better, does that mean that the Padres' hitters are that much worse?

If Bedard hates the MEDIA, I don't think he'd like someone who asked real follow-up questions.

Bedard's laconic interviews were one of the more entertaining aspects of his time in Baltimore. No offense to this writer, but you have to step your game up when you interview Bedard. Nobody in the Baltimore press could do it, and so this was a regular occurrence.

Ask better questions, and maybe he'll give better answers.

Also, we're very happy with the trade, but Erik is a hell of a pitcher. I do miss watching him dominate every five days.

Nice to see that Bedard can be the ace that he was signed to be... when pitching against the worst team in baseball.

Equally nice to see that Bedard takes the questions about as seriously as one should.

If Bedard's next start is anywhere close to this, i.e. same general performance and results against a superior team, I'd be a lot more interested.

Erik Bedard is a stud- I am glad we made the trade to get him, but if we don't improve our offense and get competitive- he'll be gone when he's a free agent and that would be a shame.

Pitch as well as he did yesterday, Erik Bedard can be as frugal with his answers to dumb press corp questions as he pleases. Good one Erik!
