Cairo at first, Reed in right

Posted by Tom Wyrwich

For fourth consecutive game, Richie Sexson will be on the bench while Miguel Cairo plays at first. That decision, manager John McLaren said, will remain "day-to-day."

Also, Jeremy Reed will start in right field today, his fourth start since getting called up from AAA Tacoma. "We're going to keep him in the mix," McLaren said.

Most likely, R.A. Dickey and Mark Lowe would be off limits in the bullpen today -- I think "doubtful" is the word they're working with -- after combining for 7 1/3 innings yesterday. Interesting note: Yesterday was the second time in franchise history the bullpen pitched eight innings of scoreless relief. I'm sure it would have meant a lot more if they weren't down 7-nil by the time the relievers got started.

Here's the lineups:

DETROIT (23-31)

1. Curtis Granderson CF
2. Placido Polanco 2B
3. Carlos Guillen 3B
4. Magglio Ordonez RF
5. Marcus Thames LF
6. Miguel Cabrera 1B
7. Jeff Larish DH
8. Edgar Renteria SS
9. Ivan Rodriguez C

Justin Verlander RHP

MARINERS (20-35)

1. Ichiro CF
2. Jose Lopez 2B
3. Jose Vidro DH
4. Raul Ibanez LF
5. Adrian Beltre 3B
6. Kenji Johjima C
7. Jeremy Reed RF
8. Miguel Cairo 1B
9. Yuniesky Betancourt SS

Felix Hernandez RHP

It undoubtedly would have, but at this point little victories are all we have. Lowe looked great and Dickey was able to keep the bullpen fresh. That's about as good an outcome you can hope for in a loss like last night's.

Ummmm... isnt Cairo batting 0.196? With no HRs... and 9 of his 11 hits are singles (others two are doubles)?

What can we possibilty gain by having him in the lineup... there hassss to be someone better than that in our orignization. Please at least put Vidro at 1st and DH Ibanez, so Balentien can play left field...

Why must we lose games before we start...

McLaren must have read Geoff's note last night about how the M's outscored the Tigers 4-0 in the last 8 innings and decided his "hot hand" lineup still had wins left in it.

Btw... stat of the day:

M.Batista 3-6 5.98
C.Silva 3-5 6.00
J.Washburn 2-6 6.54

Solid.

Man, our team must be the laughing stock of the MLB right now. I am sure none of the 29 other MLB teams would even think of starting Miguel Cairo at 1st and Jose Vidro at DH. I don't even care anymore, this season is down the tubes anyway.

Hmmm, & singles hitters and 2 power hitters. If I’m the other team I’m shaking in my spikes.

I'd compare Vidro's stats batting 3rd to most of the other people who usually bat 3rd in the A.L.. ... and Cairo's offense to well, all 1st basemen ever for the last 120 years... but I am resolved to be happy today.

Doubly so since I'm leaving in a couple hours to go see Rush at the Gorge. W00t! Here's hoping my Good Gorge Weather Luck holds.

Have fun with the game today, folks. Try to be nice to each other; all venom and sniping is best directed at the Ms...

How does the management of a team that trots out Miguel Cairo at first have the audacity to rip on the players for not performing?

Seth Cotner is completely correct. The team isn't putting the best lineup on the field to give themselves a chance to win. A slumping Sexson is still more useful than Cairo. And, if you choose to sit Richie, you should have Balentien, Reed, Ibanez and Vidro in the lineup, with either Vidro or Ibanez playing 1B and the other DH'ing.

It's really odd... Honestly, I can't imagine any other team in baseball making these horrific decisions.

Again - nothing against Miguel Cairo. I'm sure he's a great guy, and he can play a lot of positions and run the bases pretty well. But he cannot be playing every day at a premium offensive position. It's unconscionable!

Dear Mclaren,

Just once I would like to see you go with Reed in left, Wlad in right, Ibanez at DH and Vidro at 1st. Just try it and see if the better outfield defense and potential better hitting, or at least the same hitting because it can't be any worse then it is now. Please just give it a chance. It's not like it is going to ruin our season. Maybe it will start a spark, maybe it won't but I would love to find out.

Thanks,

Yours truly,

An incredibly frustrated M's fan in Everett

My best guess is that Cairo is at first to try and light a fire under Sexson. The thinking could be that Sexson's too tight, he's too relaxed, whatever...but what he needs to be is angry. Angry that he's sitting while Miguel Cairo and his .190 bat are considered preferable.

That, or he's gone.

"A slumping Sexson is still more useful than ..."

Wow, filll in the blanks! This could be fun.
How about:
a worn out dishrag
dog turds on your lawn
a good AA first basemen?? I doubt it.
a worn out left handed fielders glove when you play first and throw lefty
a GM that sucks, maybe

Is Sexson heading to the Reds when Griffey hits his 600th? Or, will the Mariners lose patience and do a deal with the Mets?
