Mariners at Texas Rangers: 05/12
Posted by Geoff Baker
8:58 p.m.: Texas Rangers fans are in stunned disbelief, above, after a Kenji Johjima three-run homer with two out in the ninth and an 0-2 count, ties the game at 12-12. Johjima's blast came off Texas closer C.J. Wilson. A huge RBI double that inning by Raul Ibanez as well to get the M's back within three. Seattle's dugout erupted like I've never seen before when Johjima hit that ball. Any of you sending me those emails the past hour want to re-hire Bill Bavasi now? LOL. You all had him fired five minutes ago. Maybe five minutes from now, too. Let's see.
The Rangers had gone ahead 12-8 in the eighth, courtesy of four walks, three by Mark Lowe and one by Arthur Rhodes, to force in a pair of runs. The 13 walks issued by the M's is their most in a nine-inning game since they yielded 14 in July 2004. It is only the fifth time in club history they've allowed 13 or more. Hang on, it's not over yet. We're almost at a four-hour game and it's only the bottom of the ninth.
7:55 p.m.: Jose Lopez just cost his team four runs in the seventh inning, booting a ground ball that should have been the final out of the frame. Instead, his error gave the Rangers the go-ahead marker (the bases were loaded with two out) and an ensuing single to left by Josh Hamilton brought home two more runs. Pinch-hitter Frank Catalanotto then singled in another. It's now a 10-6 game, the Rangers in the lead. Things looking bleak indeed for Seattle. Tonight and overall. I watched Lopez's body language on that grounder. To me, even before the error, it looked like he was afraid of making a mistake. Yes, he had to range to his right a little. But a major league second baseman has to make that play. Mark Lowe should have been out of the inning tied 6-6.
I hope Ryan Rowland-Smith's mother wasn't streaming live on her MLB Extra Innings package from back in Australia in that inning. I don't think her son was offering friendly Aussie "G-day, mate!'' greetings to Ramon Vazquez of the Rangers after striking him out with runners at second and third. Vazquez dropped an "F" bomb or two, after which Rowland-Smith unleashed a torrent of unprintables clearly visible to the lip-reading public via television replay. No brawls this time. But the words were flying fast and furiously between the pair.
Here's the latest in our series of travel videos. Come join me as I fly from Seattle to Arlington, Texas earlier today. Catch the view of Mount Rainier out my airplane window. Afterwards, I'll show you footage of the new Dallas Cowboys stadium being built just up the road from here. For Crazy in the comments section, to answer your question, I use a Panasonic PV-GS83 digital video camera.
7:30 p.m.: Seattle just tied it in the top of the sixth, with Jeff Clement notching a leadoff double to chase Vicente Padilla from the game. Frank Francisco came on and Clement scored on a Yuniesky Betancourt double later in the frame. But the M's despite knotting the game 6-6, still left the inning wanting more. They had runners at second and third with one out following the Betancourt double. But Ichiro struck out and Jose Vidro grounded out. That's how you lose games. They are still leaving runners at third with less than two out.
Cha Seung Baek went three scoreless innings, despite allowing five baserunners, and has now been replaced by Ryan Rowalnd-Smith.
7:13 p.m.: Cha Seung Baek has taken fans on a thrill ride the past two innings, but still trails only 6-5 despite allowing a plethora of baserunners. The Rangers loaded the bases in the fourth, but Baek fanned Gerald Laird on a full-count offering to end that threat. In the fifth, the Rangers had runners at the corners with only one out, but Baek got Ian Kinsler to pop out to second. Michael Young then grounded out. Seattle's offense has been MIA since the first inning, notching just one hit. Vicente Padilla begins the sixth with his pitch count at 92, so this should be his final inning if the M's don't swing at the first pitch they see every time up.
6:18 p.m.: Stunning development in the third inning as Erik Bedard is tatooed all over the ballprk and knocked from the game before he could get even a single out. The Rangers scored five in the inning to take a 6-5 lead. Cha Seung Baek is now in the game. Wow, that's a name I never dreamed I'd hear after Seattle took that 5-0 lead. Especially not in the third inning. But Bedard gave up a pair of mammoth home runs to Josh Hamilton and Milton Bradley -- measuring 447 feet and 410 feet respectively -- to cut Seattle's lead to just a run. He then walked Brandon Boggs, prompting the M's to get Baek up in the bullpen, and yielded a double off the right field wall by Gerald Laird that nearly was a third long ball. Chris Shelton then singled to tie the game and put runners at the corners with none out, ending Bedard's night.
German Duran hit into a 6-4-3 double play to put the Rangers ahead. Don't have much to say. Bedard obviously let his team down in a huge way. Looked like one of his spring training stints. Too many of these letdown games from Felix Hernandez and now Bedard. These guys are supposed to be keeping this team afloat. Bedard was due for a game like this. But his timing stinks for his team.
5:55 p.m.: The Rangers scored another run off Erik Bedard in a long second inning that saw pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre head out to the mound for a visit. Bedard is now at 47 pitches after just two innings, despite holding a 5-2 lead. He allowed a leadoff walk to Gerlad Laird, a single up the middle by Chris Shelton that put runners at the corners and then a sacrifice fly by German Duran. An ensuing one-out walk, this one to Ramon Vazquez, got Stottlemyre out there. Bedard then struck out Ian Kinsler and Michael Young with two on to end the inning.
5:39 p.m.: Seattle leads 5-1 as we head to the bottom of the second inning. Erik Bedard gave a run right back to the Rangers in the bottom of the first, yielding a leadoff double to Ian Kinsler and a single to center by Michael Young. Bedard later walked Milton Bradley to put two on with one out, but got out of it on a double-play grounder by Brandon Boggs. Seattle went 1-2-3 in the top half of the second.
5:24 p.m.: A huge first inning by the Mariners saw them score five times off Texas starter Vicente Padilla. Only one of the runs was earned, thanks to a dubious scoring call in which third baseman Ramon Vazquez was given an error on what looked like an RBI single by Adrian Beltre. Raul Ibanez followed with a two-run homer. Two more singles, an error and a balk call on Padilla made it 4-0. Kenji Johjima then hit a sacrifice fly for the fifth Seattle run. Huge start for the M's. That five-run lead should be enough for Erik Bedard, given his past results. We'll see.
5:12 p.m.: The game is just getting underway, with Kenji Johjima catching Erik Bedard for the first time in a while. Jamie Burke had caught the last three Bedard outings. Someone in the comments thread was asking about the mood of the team. I'd say there are some issues that need ironing out. The position players held a pre-game meeting behind closed doors. Coaches sat in for part of it, then it was players-only. A few of those have gone on of late. Nothing unusual for a team losing as often as the Mariners.
By the way, Richie Sexson is here, having made the trip despite being suspended. He'll do all the pre-game workouts and take BP. But he can't stay in the dugout during the game. Told me he might sit up in a private suite with GM Bill Bavasi and his assistant, Lee Pelakoudis.

This performance looks more like that which we expected from the M's, perhaps we need to consider to more seriously consider the weather factor and its impact on M's hitting.

Erik Bedard must be double checking to make sure he has the right jersey on. He doesn't know what this big of a lead feels like. Let's hope he makes this a quick one and doesn't let them back in the game.

Who are these batters, and what have they done with our Mariners?
An Ms team in 2008 that actually takes advantage of sloppy defense and a shaky pitcher. Hot damn and biscuits.

I have a feeling the M's will continue to play better as the season heats up, but after the previous three weeks, or whatever it's been -when they're losing the days all tend to blur together- they've played so horrendously I've decided to try to enjoy each game and not get caught up in it all. We'll see how that works...

5:44 PM, May 12, 2008
Nat - yours is probably a good approach, as I too have reflected on it and as it now stands we just need to close the gap behind the division leader. Heat up and play well - these predictions make no difference if we close the games out gap. All the horrible play to date then becomes forgettable and we can then enjoy the remainder of the season with some hope because as I said performance is relative. Predictions are abstractions and meaningless - relative performance is the key.

First man- well, to be honest I have to turn the tv off or to a different channel a lot while the game is on, I really can't watch them hit lazy fly balls out or piddle away the lead like Bedard is doing now. Bedard is not fun to watch tonight. So much for the warm, fuzzy feelings for the M's :)
Get Baek up.

Just a question of strategy, why go directly to Baek in this situation? Point is he takes a long time to warm up and you need someone who is good at denying inherited runners. Why not go for the moment with someone who is more used to throwing in pressure situations, keep Baek up and then bring him in the bottom of the fourth?
Bummer the way the Bedard has pissed away this lead.

Are you kidding me!?
6 outs for Bedard in 64 pitches?
This is what we traded 5 20ish year old players for?

And it's against a not very good Texas team. Excluding their games against the M's their record would be really bad...almost as bad as ours.

Bedard did not seem to have command tonight, but there was also something going on between him and KJ. It has seemed to me for a long time that KJ does not call a good game behind the plate. He also in my opinion uses odd set ups play to hitters power strokes. So another reason to celebrate Bavasi's judgment of talent - way to go BB give us another dead one for three more years.

I know you weren't criticizing me and yes the staff does walk way to many people, but what i am saying is if he gets s couple of those piches called for a strike he may still be in there and it probably would have changed the pitches he would have thrown to other hitters. Just speculation but when you fall behind hitters and your not getting those border line strikes then you have to get a bigger chunk of the plate and the ball becomes easier to hit.

Catcher - pitcher sync would seem to be a natural point of observation, but as noted, why does McLaren, himself a former catcher, not notice this obvious problem evident in Johjima's calling of a game?

A telling study might be done that determines if there are more walks. hits when Johjima catches a particular pitcher than when Burke catches the same pitcher.

Perhaps it is just my selective perception, but I think there have been many poor outings by umpire's calling balls and strikes this year. They have not appeared to have been very consistent with the pitch tracker. Again this is just a generalization, but it does seem to be a factor in this game.

It's time for wholesale regime change... Now... This season is so over it's not even funny... Seriously... it's not funny or even fun... Look on the bright side we can buy dollar tickets and sit in 100 dollars seats again... It's like 1985 all over again..!

ScottM - earlier you said the logic with my argument that the Mariners are pretty much done was flawed because it didn't account for a three-team donnybrook in the West. Two points:
1. Wouldn't the M's get caught up in the said three-team tussle, making their opportunity to catch either the A's or Angels even more challenging?
2. It's actually not that uncommon that teams have more than one good team to deal with in their own division:
2002 - Oakland (103 wins), Anahiem (99 wins), Seattle (93) wins
2003 - Yankees (101 wins), Boston (95), Toronto (86)
2004 - Anahiem (92 wins), Oakland (91), Texas (89)
2005 - Chicago WS (99 wins), Cleveland (93), Minnesota (83)
2006 - Yankees (97 wins), Toronto (87), Boston (86); Minnesota (96 wins), Detroit (95), Chicago (90)
2007 - Boston (96 wins), New York (94), Toronto (83)
Every year since 2002 (thats as far back as I went) at least one AL division has had three teams finish above .500. Each division winner won at least 92 games, and the average wins for those division winners was almost 98 wins.
So no, it is not a stretch to say that, even in a three-team race, a division winner can win 90+ games.

Send Vidro packing, move Lopez to DH,bring up or find a good defensive 2nd baseman. Move Raul to platoon at 1st and bring up Diaz from Tacoma. We would be a lot more competive because we would be a better defensive team.

Wow! I was looking up records for walks when Johjima tied the game. Just for fun, here is a record that maybe the M's can shoot for. On September 11, 1949, the New York Yankees had eleven base on balls, courtesy of the Washington Senators, during the third inning setting the Major League mark for walks during an inning.

Can we PLEEZE send Morrow down so he can turn into a starter??
His stuff is so good. A few weeks back I thought he was miles away from being a starter because his secondary stuff was so bad and his fastball control was poor.
He's shown a lot so far, and my mind has changed. He can be a good starter soon, but the team needs to send him down to get him ready to help the club later in the year.

When Ramon Vasquez can hit your fastball, you know it's not a very good one even if he can throw 97. Scouts have knocked the lack of deception on Morrow's fastball. On gameday it showed the break was 2". Extremely straight fastball.

Adam,
I completely agree with you. He is not a reliever. It will take a month and at this point go for and get him ready for next year. Take advantage of the next four months and get him ready for next year. Bring up Corcoran or Jimenez....actually bring up both and send Lowe down. (His WHIP will be about 2 after tonight!!!!) Then, trade Washburn or Batista. Many teams are interested in those two.

Lincecum hides his ball so well. Morrow has no deception and little movement as my pal Resin pointed out. That is the difference in the two.

I know this team is struggling, but they put in a good effort tonight. And players don't need to be traded left and right...I don't understand that either. There's still 122 games to be played. I'm not as down on Lowe as some are - he's been pretty good up to tonight. He really had some bad luck in the 7th. The 8th was a disaster.
Re: Morrow - It wasn't that the fastball was a bad pitch, I think Vazquez was just sitting on it. Morrow still has a rep as a FB guy, and until he can show some more consistency with his off-speed stuff, hitters will likely be sitting dead red.
And besides, how can you say his fastball isn't good after he mowed down the first four hitters he faced?
Send Morrow down to Tacoma NOW. If he's ready by the deadline, get rid of Washburn (worst teammate ever) and put Morrow in Washburn's spot. If he's not, no biggie.

This is going to be another wasted season for Morrow. Three good things that have come out of this season so far is that Clement and Balentien are finally getting MLB experience. It's a step toward next season. The third is that with them playing such crappy baseball, I've finally had time to remodel the bathroom.
Let's just hope they send Morrow down to Tacoma so he can become part of the rotation next season. Washburn will be in the last year of his contract. Do the Mariners really think they're still in it? Let's start building towards 2009!

I really admire M's Fan's and First Man's positivism, but to me that was a CRUSHING defeat.
8 back of Los Angeles and Oakland, and now 4 back of Texas.
When you come back like this you have to finish the deal. This could have been something very special, but instead it's another monster blow to the team's already very-low confidence.
5 runs to start with, and 12 total, and we still lose. To the Texas Rangers no less, who are now twice as close as we are to first place. Tell me how this can affect the team's morale positively. Can't wait to read what Geoff has to say about this one.

The team scored 12 runs, something which they have had difficulty with all season, its got to give them some offensive confidence. They can build on this offense, work on defense and make pitching adjustment. Eight games back, cut this in half and you still have a season. It is the relative performance to the division leader that counts, the team needs to pick themselves up and start reeling off some wins to cut that games behind figure and then they have a chance.

Baek has looked like an ace facing Texas in the past. Do you really want me to go against what scouts have stated and what my own eyes see with Morrow's fastball based on four hitters? Heck velocity isn't everything Adam. Even Matt Thornton can throw 97. When you throw 97 you can get away with mistakes at times. Morrow's fastball isn't that good he needs to locate it to be successful.

What in the h*** is it going to take to string 2 wins together? I mean seriously?
We finally find our offense, and we, *gasp*, win a game! So tonight, our newly prolific offense scores 12 runs! Great news right? Can't complain about that effort. Team that up with all the great pitching we've been getting, and presto... easy win! WRONG! These are the Mariners of '08. We CAN find a way to lose! Our staff falls apart and gives up 13! Wait... what's that? 13 walks to go with the 15 hits? It's amazing we didn't give up 20 runs! Perhaps I should give our staff some credit then, eh? Who wants the pressure of a two game winning streak anyways?
With our incredible rotation, I had such high hopes for this season. But let's face it, these ain't the '95 kids. Barring some miracle, we're done, and it's only May.
You guys are absolutely killing me.

Exactly, one (1) 8 game winning streak any time during the rest of the season and we only need to play at a .600 clip to get to 93 wins. Any team that finishes the season with 93 wins better plan on playing .600 for a good chunk of the year. I think this team is capable of that. We only need one strong surge to get within a reasonable rhythm that will lead us to 93 wins.

When you consistently throw one pitch at the same speed, MLB hitters quickly learn to sit on it and soon light it up. Morrow's find for short stints, but it was a bit much to keep him in for a second inning. He is a long way from becoming a starting pitcher, he will need to develop some effective pitches to go with that fastball. Pity the M's scouts could not see this one pitch wonder when they passed up Lincecum. Still Morrow is an asset, but he must be used more carefully just as Lowe has use limitations. In effect, both Lowe and Morrow are set-up pitchers not to be used more than one inning at a time.
Posted by Adam
10:17 PM, May 12, 2008
Resin - I agree that a good fastball must be located.
If you want to say that that fastball Vazquez hit was a bad pitch, fine. But when he locates it, it is a plus pitch. And he's done much better this year locating his fastball.
I've been a big Morrow critic in the past, but he's coming better than I expected given the way the M's are mishandling him. Before Vazquez, he was painting with his fastball. Then he lost one up a bit that Vazquez was sitting on.
As I said, until he can develop a reliable secondary pitch, his fastball is susceptible.
But he doesn't have a bad fastball.

Smarto, I am not sure you are addressing me, your 93 wins figure comes from Adam. My point is cut this eight games out lead to say four by the July and then you are in the race. No one really knows how many wins it will take to win the division, the point is competition is relative to the leader in the west. Get within four by July and keep it close and you have a chance. In fact, many pennants have been won in the last month of a season by teams who overcame a four games behind deficit. So my point is that there is no magic number of wins, there is relative performance in terms of games behind the division leader. We are letting the statistics do the talking instead of playing the games.

First Man, I don't know Adam from Adam, I don't follow this blog religiously because it's too negative. I agree with everything you have said. You simply come from a slightly different perspective than myself. You say we cut or deficit by half with two and a half months to go in the season and we've improved our chances two fold. I dig that!! I say slip in an 8 game win streak in there somewhere, and we don't need to play .670 the rest of the way to win the division, however many wins it takes.

Smarto - We are in agreement, lets take this game and be positive. This team can score runs, the pitching can do better - it was the walks that shot us down - and the defense can improve. Main thing is to go with the offensive improvement, make it something positive and build a winning tradition.

Sounds like just the promotion necessary to get that eight game streak going that you spoke of, there is plenty of time if we can just begin cutting the games behind deficit. Let the statistics rest until the end of the season, there is no need to have a simulation dictate reality - play the games - win games.

Lincoln and Armstrong are getting zero pressure from Nintendo, a very passively run company who doesn't want to ruffle any feathers. Let Nintendo of Japan know you are tired of these guys.
