John McLaren was asked about the roster moves from today when he spoke to reporters this afternoon before the game.

On optioning P Eric O'Flaherty to AA:
"We had to get Eric his confidence back. He was struggling so much. The velocity is there and we're trying to give him a chance to work through it and it just wasn't happening and we had to make a move and Arthur was ready."

On Erik Bedard's hip (Note: Bedard was in the clubhouse and looked to be walking around just fine, though he evaded commenting on his injury): "He said he's feeling better today...Hopefully this will be short term."
Bedard will throw a bullpen session before he returns to game action.
McLaren wasn't sure when Bedard was going to throw again but it could be tomorrow.

On R.A. Dickey: "He's kind of versatile. He'll be everywhere. In case Erik's not ready [for his next start] he might take that slot."

On Adrian Beltre's hamstring: "He said he feels fine, so we'll go from there."

On J.J. Putz: "He's taking the day off [from throwing]...He's fine. We do not have a time frame on this guy. It's something where we want him to be 100 percent and take his time."

From PS: "the ERA stat evens out a little bit when a pitcher like Baek gets yanked after loading the bases with only an out, only to have a reliever come in and clean up his mess and spare him runs."

Good point PS. I definitely agree that this "evening out" is more true with starting pitchers who have longer stretches to clean up their own messes and, therefore, have ERA's more indicative of their total performances.

It's the relievers who, more often, have low ERA's but are weak at holding the runners inherited by other pitchers, thus giving a very skewed portrait of effectiveness.

Yesterday, I still say that McLaren should have let Baek clean up his own mess rather than roll the dice with EO and his recent losing streak.

Hmmm, wonder how long Mac is gonna leave Washburn in if Wash keeps giving up runs? Time to get himself straightened out, and if that doesn't work, does he leave him in to mop up some innings?

nice and another homerun...not by us but by KS. We're getting beated by a shitty team . with the the pitcher they have on the mound. good luck with this game. I just turned my TV off. Mariners ARE a bunch of jokes

Well, getting away from this game, I think that the latest report on Bedard brightened up the day a bit. I thought he would be placed on the DL today, but to hear that he was walking around pain-free made me a little more optimistic.

But the optimism ends there. M's down 3-0 against a guy that's 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA.

Giving up after 2 innings, down by 3??? Wow hope I'm never that pessimistic (nobody better come back with a lame “it’s just realistic not pessimistic” post either)

But even if last season's bullpen collapse did not occur, most managers in his situation would have handled it the way he did yesterday by riding O'Flaherty into the ground and saving his other arms.

Completely disagree that "most managers" would have done what Mac did. Geoff has a right to his opinion and he can defend Mac at any extreme all he wants. I just never ever ever seen a team concede the game or bring in, or leave a reliever in, as a mop up guy after trailing only by 4 runs.

Sure we only lost a few games thanks to Mac's bullpen management. To say little damage was done, I will point to the end of the year if the dozen or more games during the course of the season couldn't have helped the club win the division.

The Tigers rallied from a 5 run defecit and the offense was poor prior to that game. Does anyone here think Leyland would leave EOF getting shelled only down by 4 runs?

Wow the comments on this board absolutely DISGUST me. How pessimistic can you guys be? Jesus how about you just shut up and stop complaining all the time...talk about a bunch of bandwagon fans. We're down 3-1 at the end of the third...now why don't you guys just watch the damn game and keep all of your discouraging posts that claim the mariners are incompetent to yourself. We're 14 games into the season, so why don't all of you get your heads out of your asses and realize that. Enjoy the game!

I never said they were incompetent. I was actually being positive when I was talking about Bedard in my earlier post.

The game isn't over yet. Two runs is nothing...

Resin, I'm totally in your camp man. I only had a chance to skim all the comments from today. The M's (Mac) gave that game away last night. Settling for 2 out of 3 is not good enough especially against the A's who we needed to make a statement to. Coming from behind is not out of the realm of possibility.

BTW it's kinda great to see Rhodes back in the M's bullpen. Feels good.

As to Arthur... Curb Your Enthusiasm

I would love to see him return to his former form, but he hasn't pitched since 2006, a year in which he was pretty bad (in the NL, no less). He gave up 30 BB and 47 hits (47!) in just under 46 innings.

In fairness to him, he saw more RH hitters than left. However, LHB's hit .290/.353/.500 off of him, anyway. I know he used to be great, but don't be surprised if he's not anymore. It could happen, lots of relievers have resurrected their careers at an advanced age.

I hope it does

That's pretty good for your #4 starter.

That was the worst thing I have seen in awhile now. They send Ichiro on a hit and run when he could have stolen second base earlier in Lopez's count. Nice base running. When it rains it pours.

Get Dickey in the rotation. A knuckleball pitcher who can throw strikes is like finding gold.
