That's the good news so far. Cross your fingers. It came down pretty good about 90 minutes ago as you'll see from my shots down below, taken from the Orioles dugout. Lots of reunions going on for both teams today. I chatted with Adam Jones and George Sherrill in the Baltimore clubhouse and dugout respectively. Over in Seattle's clubhouse, lots of Baltimore media gathered around for an Erik Bedard chat. Won't be many stories coming out of that session, I can tell you now. Things were different in the visitors' dugout, where Mariners third base coach Sam Perlozzo held court (see the photo on the next page). Perlozzo, you may recall, was the Orioles' manager until being fired last season, midway through a three-year contract.
Jones told us the fans in Baltimore have made him feel at home.
"The team, the fans and the city have all welcomed me with open arms,'' he said.
He was told early on not to try to carry the wieght of the franchise on his shoulders. Hasn't always been easy, he added, especially with the Mariners coming in here to play now. But he's going to try to stay within himself and play the way he can.
Sherrill told me that closing full time for the O's is really no different from when he used to do it sporadically for the Mariners.
"You're just throwing last instead of next to last,'' he said. 'There really is no difference. If you try to make too much out of it, it really is going to be too much.''
Mike Morse is not in the lineup for a fourth straight game. He was supposed to face lefty Adam Loewen tonight. But the Orioles were rained out last night and Loewen has been pushed back to tomorrow.
"It's not too tough,'' Morse said of possibly losing some of the momentum he had coming out of spring training. "It's as tough as you make it.''
He's trying to stay loose by coming out early to hit and taking extra flyballs as well. He'll stand in the infield and outfield during batting practice and field the balls coming off hitters' bats.
"I'm not concerned,'' Mariners manager John McLaren said of Morse. "That's the way it is. That's the game.''
