Ramirez released
Posted by Geoff Baker
There you go. Doesn't quite rate as a surprise. As many of you have noted, there was just no room on this year's squad for Horacio Ramirez. By releasing him today, the M's only have to pay him a sixth of his $2.75-million salary for the coming season.
I caught up with Ramirez moments ago as he was packing his locker. He'd just gotten the news and wasn't in much of a mood to talk. Was polite, as always, but having a lousy day. He has no leads on any other camp openings.
"No, nothing yet,'' he said.
If his agent is any good, he's been quietly scouting around because this release was a foregone conclusion for anyone paying attention.
"We did not believe Horacio was going to break camp with us,'' Mariners GM Bill Bavasi said in a release. "We felt it would be in everyone's best interest to give him time to catch on with another club.''
Thus ends one of the bleaker trade sagas in Seattle history. Yes, the M's gave up premier reliever Rafael Soriano, essentially for nothing. His final numbers: 8-7 with a 7.16 ERA last season. Yes, this does leave an opening on the roster for a non-roster guy to be added.
Here's something to brighten your day after that heavy note...
Yes, that's former manager Mike Hargrove in yellow, offering moral support to one Ichiro as he battles his way out of his "hitting slump". Hargrove is here acting as a consultant to Bavasi on a number of Seattle hitters. "Just hit the ball, Ich!'' would be my guess on dialogue. Yes, I'm trying to be funny.

Nice guy. Bad pitcher. Let's wish him well.

So...
All we need to do now is realize Morse can do all the things Cairo can do, only younger, better, cheaper, and with actual upside.
Until then, I won't rest easy.

Can we release Bavasi, Lincoln and Armstrong as well?

Well, that didn't work.
I guess Mel's ability to work miracles only goes so far.

Can we see if Atlanta wanted to trade Soriano back to us for Ramirez? Let's have a do over!

Wow...I have to give Bavasi credit for making this decision. It gives me hope that Cairo and/or Bloomquist won't be on the team.
The HoRam trade was one of the worst in Mariners history. But maybe his release is the start of the Mariner's FO making good decisions.
Maybe...

Can we get a mulligan from MLB and get Soriano back?
Bavasi is such a MORON!

Actually, the start of the M's making good decisions clearly happened this winter with Bedard.

But can a couple of good decisions really erase all of the bad ones Bavasi has made? I don't think so.
It's about time. I cringed every time Ramirez pitched. And he had an awful nickname.

AK, I hope you're not serious about Bloomquist.
There's no chance the FO releases him -- believing that its a possiblity is living in fantasy land.
However, I hope that they open their eyes and release Cairo.

If there was one trade that irritated me more than any other in M's history, it was this one. Others have fallen through spectacularly, but at least there was some attempt at rhyme or reason in most of them, however misplaced. There was NEVER any reason to trade Soriano for Ramirez. Right from the start, it was a joke. I actually didn't mind trading Soriano, simply because we were deep. But to get someone like Ramirez was complete idiocy. Soriano could have brought a real quality bat or prospect or starter. To take a soft-tossing, injured, mediocre player from the NL was insanity.

Look, the reason Bavasi made the Soriano for HoRam deal is no mystery. He desperately needed another starting pitcher and we didn't have one ready in the organization. The FA market sucked, so he took a flyer on a guy who had been damaged and hoped for the best. In retrospect, it was a really bad call for sure, but that's a sunk cost. The only important thing this season (since Bavasi is still here) is what we do now. The M's swallowed their pride and did the right thing. Give Bill some credit for that. I'm not excusing bad decisions in the past, but maybe people should stop with the innuendo that justifying past trades is somehow a higher priority for this FO than winning. Somebody has posted repeatedly that the M's won't give up on Reed because they are still trying to justify the Freddy Garcia trade (while others think Reed should make this year's team!). I think it is clear that the opening day team will be the one that management thinks has the best chance to contend. Their priorities may be questionable, but that isn't the same thing as sacrificing talent for eqo. I don't think this will be the last difficult but necessary decision made before March 31 either. Team developments and Mac's recent comments suggest that we may actually be prepared to go with 11 pitchers this year, which I think is good news.
Mahalo for all the energy and food for though on your first day back Geoff. Did you actually say in your thread last night that you didn't want to be the "rude Canadian"? Canucks have historically been the object of a lot of tongue in cheek slander from U.S. citizens, especially in border states, but rude? That's a national competition that Americans duke out with the French every year. Your countrymen aren't even bronze medal contenders in that one. Of course, these days we mostly just cower in awe of your overpowering currency. Nineteen days and counting!

Good. Finally a smart decision by the Seattle FO.
And don't forget - Morrow is where he is today (wasting away in the Seattle BP) because of the Ramirez trade.
Truly a horrible trade.
