Wow...I have to give Bavasi credit for making this decision. It gives me hope that Cairo and/or Bloomquist won't be on the team.

The HoRam trade was one of the worst in Mariners history. But maybe his release is the start of the Mariner's FO making good decisions.

But can a couple of good decisions really erase all of the bad ones Bavasi has made? I don't think so.

It's about time. I cringed every time Ramirez pitched. And he had an awful nickname.

There's no chance the FO releases him -- believing that its a possiblity is living in fantasy land.

If there was one trade that irritated me more than any other in M's history, it was this one. Others have fallen through spectacularly, but at least there was some attempt at rhyme or reason in most of them, however misplaced. There was NEVER any reason to trade Soriano for Ramirez. Right from the start, it was a joke. I actually didn't mind trading Soriano, simply because we were deep. But to get someone like Ramirez was complete idiocy. Soriano could have brought a real quality bat or prospect or starter. To take a soft-tossing, injured, mediocre player from the NL was insanity.

Look, the reason Bavasi made the Soriano for HoRam deal is no mystery. He desperately needed another starting pitcher and we didn't have one ready in the organization. The FA market sucked, so he took a flyer on a guy who had been damaged and hoped for the best. In retrospect, it was a really bad call for sure, but that's a sunk cost. The only important thing this season (since Bavasi is still here) is what we do now. The M's swallowed their pride and did the right thing. Give Bill some credit for that. I'm not excusing bad decisions in the past, but maybe people should stop with the innuendo that justifying past trades is somehow a higher priority for this FO than winning. Somebody has posted repeatedly that the M's won't give up on Reed because they are still trying to justify the Freddy Garcia trade (while others think Reed should make this year's team!). I think it is clear that the opening day team will be the one that management thinks has the best chance to contend. Their priorities may be questionable, but that isn't the same thing as sacrificing talent for eqo. I don't think this will be the last difficult but necessary decision made before March 31 either. Team developments and Mac's recent comments suggest that we may actually be prepared to go with 11 pitchers this year, which I think is good news.

Canucks have historically been the object of a lot of tongue in cheek slander from U.S. citizens, especially in border states, but rude? That's a national competition that Americans duke out with the French every year. Your countrymen aren't even bronze medal contenders in that one. Of course, these days we mostly just cower in awe of your overpowering currency. Nineteen days and counting!
