Rough rehabs

Three of the M's pitching hopefuls rebounding from elbow injuries took the mound today in a minor league game between Class AAA Tacoma and Class AA West Tennessee. But things did not go all that great for Arthur Rhodes, Chris Reitsma and Mark Lowe.
Rhodes went two innings for Tacoma, yielding five earned runs on five hits. Yikes! Rhodes also yielded a walk and struck a batter out. But those are not confidence-inspiring numbers. And while it isn't really about the numbers in spring training, when you're rehabbing two weeks before the season starts and get poleaxed by a AA squad, you've got some work ahead of you.
Reitsma pitched an inning for the AA squad, allowing a run on a hit and two walks. He struck out a pair as well.
Lowe had the best line of the three, yielding a run on two hits while striking out a pair over two innings for the AA team.
The way things are looking right now, none of those three are likely to head north with the big club -- at least for the moment.
Brandon Morrow should throw his bullpen session in the next 60-90 minutes here at the Peoria Sports Complex ahead of tonight's game against the Diamondbacks.
One pitcher to watch in tonight's game will be Sean Green. He was victimized by some bad luck and seeing-eye grounders his last time out, giving up six runs against the Giants in Scottsdale last Saturday. Interesting to see how he rebounds from that. He's scheduled to be the fourth pitcher in the game, after Jarrod Washburn, Ryan Rowland-Smith and J.J. Putz.
With Morrow still yet to have his bullpen after that fatigued shoulder shut him down last week, Green all of a sudden takes on added importance in a bullpen looking a little on the fragile side. More so than we've been used to seeing in a while.
Some better news in this story about a former M's reliever. George Sherrill is the new closer for the Baltimore Orioles, a guy his manager is now calling the most important player on the team heading into 2008. Nice guys don't always finish last.

Heh - in the case of Sherril becoming a closer... wouldn't this be a case where "Nice guys finish last" - but it's a good thing :).

Hey, what happened to Morse? He hasn't been in a game for a while, is Mac trying to cool him off? Maybe he's hoping that we will forget about him when Cairo makes the team instead.

Why would Arizona use a DH when Owings hits the ball like he does. Didn't he lead the NL pitchers in HRs last year.
