Four regulars and a Bedard
Posted by Jose Romero
That's what the Mariners have in the lineup today at Tucson Electric Park agains the Chicago White Sox.
The ChiSox. Does anyone call them that anymore? I'll get to the lineups in a bit.
Manager John McLaren was asked about the open backup roster spot before today's game, and the theme of his responses was that he and his staff are open-minded. That is to say, they're deliberating. But it now appears that McLaren is considering keeping two roster spots open for position players, which could be good news for Mike Morse, the hottest player in camp to date.
"We're very open-minded about it," McLaren said. "We've got numerous guys competing for that job, or two jobs, whatever direction we go. There's so many different scenarios, and all these guys bring a little bit of something different to the table. So the competition's been great, and we'll just see how as the spring goes on, the needs of the ball club and how everybody fits in and who fits in the best.
"Everyone of these guys has impressed us some way or another."
McLaren has had a meeting about team needs and how the roster is shaping up. He said he and the coaches broke down each candidate and what he can bring to the team. McLaren also didn't rule out GM Bill Bavasi searching the waiver wire for a player.
Two extra position players -- let's say Morse and Greg Norton, for example -- woiuld give the M's 14 position players if you factor in the nine starters, Bloomquist, Cairo, Burke, and two more. Then the Mariners would keep 11 pitchers, which is another consideration McLaren said he has.
New subject:
Larry Stone, my colleague, asked McLaren about Erik Bedard. McLaren delivered the one-liner by answering "That's one question, Larry, you've got three to go."
That said, let's go the lineups:

Jose - You need to ask McLaren point blank "are Cario and Bloomquist guareenteed roster spots". If he says yes...well....hmmmm....I guess any followup questions would be pointless.
