Top Gun
Posted by Jose Romero
I couldn't help but think of that movie as these jet fighters roared above Tucson Electric Park during the Mariners' pregame warmups. One jet zipped low above the stadium and cause infield practice to be interrupted, as everyone stopped and stared skyward.
Maverick and Goose and Iceman and Slider were up there trying to shoot down some bogeys or something.
I believe there is an Air Force installation nearby, actually. And yes, I know that Top Gun is based on Navy planes.
Greetings to all from Tucson, where the Mariners are taking on the defending NL West champion Arizona Diamondbacks at their spring training home. I'm now on the same clock time as everyone in Seattle and the Northwest, as Arizona doesn't change its clocks all year.
Mariners manager John McLaren is here along with most of the team's coaching staff. Only bench coach Jim Riggleman and hitting coach Jeff Pentland are not -- Riggleman is managing the split-squad game in Maryvale and Pentland stayed behind for some dental work.
McLaren said some roster decisions are forthcoming, perhaps by the end of the three-day Tucson trip, but didn't tip his hand.
