Sights and Sounds: Intrasquad game
Posted by Geoff Baker
Nothing like the sounds of bats cracking balls, leather mitts popping and umpires calling guys out on strikes. Well, except maybe Dave Niehaus and Rick Rizzs providing some commentary towards the end. We've got it all here for you. The first -- and only -- intrasquad game the Mariners will play this spring. Team Brown defeated Team Steinmann 2-1 in the six-inning affair.
You'll see lefty (or, we can try righty) Phillip Barzilla notching a called strikeout on Wladimir Balentien right at the top, then brushing back the next hitter, Charlton Jimerson, with a pitch high and inside. The very next offering gets drilled down the right field line by Jimerson for a double, but Barzilla gets out of it on a fly ball. Cesar Jimenez, vying for a spot as a late-inning left hander, tossed two scoreless innings for the victory. You'll see him giving up one of his two hits. He's wearing No. 62.
A few more hits seen along the way. Rizzs even has a beverage tip at the end.
Bronson Sardinha hit a solo home run off Brodie Downs in the fourth to open the scoring and give Team Steinmann its only run of the game.
