Sights and Sounds: Day 4
Posted by Geoff Baker
Today, you'll get to see Richie Sexson take his first cuts of spring training in the batting cage. Keep an eye on Yuniesky Betancourt, off to the left of the cage, in the second sequence of video. Betancourt starts yammering away in Spanish at Adrian Beltre as another player replaces Sexson in the cage. Any idea what he's saying? The Spanish is so rapid-fire that I can't keep up.
You'll see a behind-the-cage shot of Betancourt taking BP as well.
We shot some of the pitchers' fielding drills. You'll see the pitchers practising their pick-off moves to first base, with J.J. Putz making two throws over. Later, there's a sequence where Miguel Batista, Carlos Silva and Jarrod Washburn handle consecutive comebackers to the mound and make the throw over to second base. The final video sequence shows a close-up of pitchers handling comebackers. Cha Seung Baek, a pretty good fielder, is about to step in and the coach clearly wants to challenge him with a harder hit ball. But the horn, signaling the end of the drill, blasts just as Baek steps in. The players get a hoot out of beating the coach to the buzzer and all jog off the field without Baek taking another turn. Baek himself is rather pleased.
UPDATE: 3:27 P.M.: Sorry about the earlier technical problems, hopefully we're all fine now.
Thought I'd leave you today with this tidbit on pitcher R.A. Dickey, the second ":victim" in the team's daily morning singalong. Dickey was picked at random and chose a rendition of the Tennessee Volunteers fight song to serenade his fellow teammates with. Glad I wasn't around to hear it.

Dear Tom and Ray: My wife Olivia's first car (in the early '70s) was a purple-sparkle dune buggy built on a VW Bug frame — one of the least-safe...
