Mariners set 25-man roster

Posted by Larry Stone

Larry Stone here, Sunday afternoon from Safeco Field, where the Mariners are going through their final workout before Opening Day tomorrow against Oakland.

The 25-man roster is now complete, and it contained one surprise: outfielder Jason Ellison, a Port Orchard native and former high school teammate of Willie Bloomquist, will be on it.

The Mariners executed a trade with the Giants Sunday, sending lefty pitcher Travis Blackley to San Francisco for Ellison, who has a .255 career average in 235 games.

Ellison's arrival meant curtains for Rey Ordonez, whose remarkable comeback ended less than 24 hours from making it back to the big leagues. Ordonez was re-assigned to the minor leagues, but I talked to him briefly a few minutes ago, and he's not going back to the minors. "I'm too old,'' he said with a smile. Ordonez was very gracious, saying that such moves are part of baseball, and he would consult with his agent to see what he would do next. He hopes another major-league team will call with a spot on their roster, but realistically, that's unlikely.

The Mariners also made it official that Brandow Morrow, their No. 1 draft pick last June, and Rule 5 selection Sean White had made the team, as has backup catcher Jamie Burke. Jake Woods, Mike Morse and Adam Jones were all optioned to Tacoma.

The final moves announced Sunday were placing Cesar Jimenez and Mark Lowe on the 60-day DL and designating for assignment infielder Michael Garciaparra. Those transactions were made to clear room on the 40-man roster for Morrow, Burke and Arthur Rhodes.
