Romar on Hawes pick
Posted by Bob Condotta at 7:39 PM
Washington coach Lorenzo Romar spoke with the media a little while ago concerning the drafting tonight of Spencer Hawes.
Here are some of those quotes:
On his overall thoughts: "We're just pumped. That was a place he was familiar with and it was on the West Coast. ... He's very analytical and he studied all the teams quite a bit in depth that he thought he may have a chance to go to and Sacramento was one of those that he thought, in regards to location and how they played in the past and what type of bigs have been successful with them, that it was a place he thought he could do well. So he's excited."
On whether being picked 10th justifies Hawes' decision to come out when he did: "I think so. Early on, people questioned why he would do it and people would say he's not ready yet. You know what? Physically, he may not be ready at this point. He has some things he has to learn. But as I continue to say, the NBA is going to help him with that and they believed that and backed that up by picking him 10th. He can definitely play in the NBA. I don't think we've seen the finished product of Spencer Hawes yet. And that's what I mean when I say maybe he's not ready yet. But he can definitely play in the NBA and the Sacramento Kings certainly think so.''
On Washington's budding repuation for sending guys to the NBA: "With Spencer, this is five years now and we've had five players in the NBA, and the last three year's we've had first-round draft choices and two lotterhy choices. So playing at Washington is definitely not going to hurt your chances at all.''
BY THE WAY, might want to check out the Kings' website here.
