Hawes heads to Orlando

Posted by Bob Condotta at 8:45 AM

Today marks the beginning of the Orlando Pre-Draft camp and our NBA writer, Percy Allen, is there and will file reports every day. His story on the camp, featuring a little bit of info on Spencer Hawes, is here.

The conventional wisdom remains that Hawes is gone and only something that indicates he's staying would be regarded as real news at this point.

One veteran NBA watcher told me last week that the surest sign yet that Hawes is gone is the fact that he isn't working out at Orlando but rather is simply there to
take physicals. If he really were interested in assessing his position, this person said, wouldn't he work out? Only guys who know they are in the draft and want to protect their draft position avoid working out, he said.

Another person pointed out to me recently that Hawes, who had knee surgery last year and the noted virus that caused him to lose 20 or so pounds, is more worried that he might suffer another health setback that could cause his draft status to fall if he came back for another year rather than thinking he might be able to move up a few spots if he returned.

Speaking of Hawes, here's an interesting scouting report from a guy who thinks Hawes is going to be a good pro.

I know some of you are weary of Hawes' situation but I still think it's worth noting in this space, so I will. But I also promise to have some non-Hawes info on here soon, as well.
