Romar looks ahead
Posted by Bob Condotta
Realized I had a few left-over quotes from UW coach Lorenzo Romar from an interview shortly after the season that I meant to get posted that I never did.
So with a little lull in the proceedings I'll get some of those up now.
One topic was some of the incoming players for next season and what role Romar thinks they could play immediately.
Here are some of his thoughts:
C.J. WILCOX: "He's a tremendous athlete that can really shoot the ball. I think he walks in from day one and could be our best shooter. And he's really athletic and quick and rangy.''
CHARLES GARCIA JR.: "He's a skilled big guy,'' Romar said, adding that "he's a four'' in the traditional way of defining players but that "in our system he's just a big. He can guard probably four positions on the four. He's a player that if you switch on defense he can pick up a guard and there's no reason to be alarmed. He's probably better at playing with his back to the basket than Darnell (Gant) but he's not a guy you just put down there all the time. Matthew (Bryan-Amaning) and Tyreese (Breshers) probably would be those who give you the best low-post presence and after that it would be Garcia and Clarence (Trent).''
CLARENCE TRENT: "He's pretty versatile. He could end up being a guy that could really excel on the defensive end, can really rebound. He could surprise some people. He went to The Patterson School and they play a ton of games, did a ton of winning, got a lot of D-I players on that team and been in there with those types of teams. So sometimes (playing for teams like that) numbers don't tell the story because you've got so many guys playing so many miutes. I'd say he's like Bobby Jones. He's more that way than Darnell Gant is.''
This discussion of Garcia and Trent led to the obvious statement that those will have to help replace Jon Brockman next season. Romar said definitively it will be a group effort, UW needing all of the big players to step up to fill that void. "No one (player) is doing to do what Jon Brockman did,'' he said. "There will not be a Jon Brockman clone there. It will just be done differently.''
One of the players who will be most counted on for that is Bryan-Amaning, who suffered through an up-and-down season as a sophomore, eliciting great excitement with his play in early December then falling off down the stretch. MBA has already gotten right back to the task of preparing for next year in one-on-one workouts this month with assistant Paul Fortier.
Said Romar of Bryan-Amaning: "After he hurt his toe (in mid-January), then he had a couple of subpar games and maybe he didn't totally regain his confidence after that. But the Arizona series late in the year here I thought he played very well. It wasn't 20 and 10 (he had a combined 15 points and six rebounds in 26 minutes in the two games) but he played very well when he was in there. It's also part of the process with some players that it takes them longer to become consistent.''
I'll have one more installment with some thoughts on the seasons of Isaiah Thomas, Quincy Pondexter and Gant.
