Pondexter has hernia surgery, will pass on draft

Posted by Bob Condotta

Any lingering notion Quincy Pondexter had of putting his name into the NBA Draft just to test the waters evaporated on Friday when he had surgery to repair a sports hernia injury that apparently bothered him much of the second half of the season.

After a strong finish to his year despite that ailment, Pondexter had said he might put his name in mostly to get an evaluation from NBA scouts of his play. Underclassmen are allowed to go through the process once and then pull their names out and return to school.

But the recovery from the surgery will have him laid up for a little bit --- he joked through a spokesman that "I won't be doing any dunking for a while'' --- and means he wouldn't have been in peak condition physically to go through any of the pre-draft workouts.

That also means that once healthy, Pondexter can get back to devoting full attention to being the leader of the Huskies next season as the only senior on the roster with the recent transfer of Joe Wolfinger.

This also means UW's roster is basically set --- barring anything unexpected --- for the 2009-10 season, with nine returning players and four newcomers making for the NCAA scholarship limit of 13.
