On guard
Posted by Bob Condotta
As the Huskies prepare for a game against Florida International today, a lot of the focus is on their guard play.
Percy Allen examined UW's backcourt in this story today in light of the Huskies' turnover issues to date. UW has had 23 and 18 turnovers in its first two games and also had 20 in the exhibition against Western Washington.
Bad as UW seemed at times in the turnover area a year ago, the Huskies actually had 18 or more just five times all season. So in the early going, this definitely seems like a more turnover-prone team. Some of it is a style of play issue --- UW is definitely trying to play faster than it did last season.
But some of it is also just sloppy play that has to be corrected, especially as the Huskies start facing tougher teams, as will be the case next week with Kansas and then either Florida or Syracuse in the Kansas City portion of the CBE Classic.
And it's been kind of a team effort so far, as five players each have five or more turnovers, led by the eight of Justin Dentmon and the seven of Quincy Pondexter.
The Huskies are 17-point favorites tonight.
POMERY RATINGS --- By the way, I know some of you like Ken Pomeroy and his ratings. He has UW 95th today and a rather surprising Pac-10 team at No. 1.
In his team scouting reports, Pomeroy's numbers also back up UW's turnover problems to date, ranking them 273rd in the country in that category.
