CSU day after

In case you missed it, here's my story for the paper and on-line on last night's game.

One thing I neglected to mention in the story was the defensive job the Huskies did on CSU forward J'Nathan Bullock, who is being tabbed by some as a possible player of the year in the Horizon League this season. The Huskies held him to 3-15 shooting with Jon Brockman doing much of the heavy lifting in controlling him.

"We did a great job, collectively, forcing him to take tough shots,'' Brockman said.

Also worth at least a note --- UW was 18-29 on free throws, or 62.1 percent, a little, but not a lot, better than the 59 percent against Portland and last season. And the biggest offenders were the three guys who figure to shoot the most FTs this year --- Brockman (3-5), Quincy Pondexter (2-6) and Isaiah Thomas (3-5). That's a combined 8-16 for what may be the team's three leading scorers this year. Obviously, after a 15-point win and just two games into the year, you wouldn't think much about if it weren't for what happened last season.

IN OTHER NEWS. ...

--- Portland lost last night to Portland State and former UW assistant Ken Bone. UW will host Portland State on Dec. 14. Former Husky Phil Nelson scored seven points.

--- UW plays Florida International Thursday night at 7 p.m. FIU is a member of the Sun Belt Conference and off to a 2-0 start. They were picked to finish fifth in the East Division of the Sun Belt this year by Lindy's. They have four starters back, but are without one of them, forward Alex Galindo, who was projected to be their best player and an All-Sun Belt pick this season. Galindo, who is a transfer from Kansas, is out until mid-December with an ankle injury. So this doesn't loom as the sternest test in the world.
