Romar on the freshmen
Posted by Bob Condotta
As part of the continuing series from an interview the other day with UW coach Lorenzo Romar, here are some of his thoughts on the team's incoming freshmen (and redshirt freshmen).
Romar said his overall assessment of the new players is that "they are a group that doesn't mind working. They understand. They've got a really good grasp on how things should work and they are pretty smart guys. They catch on to things really well really. They are compliant freshmen.
"Those are things that we knew about them when we recruited them, but not that our (veteran) players have seen them and others have seen them it (reinforces it).''
Keep in mind, UW coaches have not yet been able to really work with the new players, getting reports instead on how they are doing from veteran players and others who watch them in informarl workouts.
So understanding that, Romar offered these thoughts on the freshmen:
Elston Turner: "Keep hearing just what a good shooter he is, how smart a player he is. If you set a screen for him that he's so good at reading it. He just knows how to play.''
Scott Suggs: "He really knows how to play. I keep hearing people (describe him as having) sneaky athleticism. Yes, (he could used more weight.) So did George Gervin, Jamaal Wilkes. You can look at him and see that. But because he is thinner, I don't think that eliminate him from playing. He knows how to play the game. He'll be a good talent.''
Isaiah Thomas: "Everyone has been impressed how well he sees the floor and passes the ball. I guess he gets them off-guard. They hear how much he scores, people didn't know he can really pass.''
Darnell Gant: "He's done a nice job. His redshirt year was very good for him. He's an inside player. He can go outside, but that doesn't make him a perimeter player. But ultimately, he should be able to guard perimeter guys.''
Will all the freshmen play this season? "The thought is that they all have the opportunity. There aren't any of those freshmen that you look at and say 'he's going to be really good, but down the road.' They all have an opportunity to come in and contribute.''
(Note --- Tyreese Breshers has not participated much in the off-season due to his injury situation, which was detailed in the previous post).
