Roy to have surgery

Posted by Bob Condotta

In case you missed it, the Blazers announced last night that Brandon Roy will have surgery today to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

This is a similar surgery to the one Roy had at UW in 2004 after he was injured early in the season, though to the other knee.

Jason Quick of the Oregonian points out that when he had that surgery, he was back playing in three weeks. Indeed he was, though the knee also bothered him all season, and still wasn't 100 percent by the spring, one of the biggest factors Roy decided not to put his name in for the NBA Draft.

That will always be one of the great mysteries of Husky basketball --- just how good could that 2004-05 team have been if Roy were 100 percent the whole season?

As for this surgery, it looks as if he should have enough time to recover before the season really begins.

"That will always be one of the great mysteries of Husky basketball --- just how good could that 2004-05 team have been if Roy were 100 percent the whole season?"

Come on Bob, you are better than these "What if" scenarios. To play along since you started it, put Roy at 100% and put my Wildcats with no early defections to the NBA or transfers.

Huskys: 04-05: Robinson, Simmons, Roy, Jones, Conroy, Jensen , Smith, Rollins, Burmeister, Gasser, and Potter.

2 NBA players that have stuck in Roy and Robinson. 2 NBA experience with Jones and Conroy.

Wilcats: 04-05: Salim Stoudamire, Will Bynum, Mustafa Shakur, Chris Rodgers, Hasan Adams, Jawann McClelan, Andre Iguodola, Ivan Radenovic, Isiah Fox, Kirk Walters, and Channing Frye.

4 NBA Players that have stuck in Frye, Igudola, Stoudamire, and Adams. 2 NBA experience with Bynum and Shakur.

People that know basketball would take my "What If" squad over the Huskies every day of the week.

oh good, I see meatball and jh have met each other.

I was thinking..... you two could each move out of your parents place and get an apartment together. You could stay up as late as you want with your *online friends*, drink orange soda all you want, little ceasers pizza for breakfast....

You're right, we don't need 'what ifs.' (Not that your comparison makes sense, an injury is not a transfer and not a defection).

All we need is what actually happened: we beat 'Zona twice, the second time for the Pac-10 championship.

That was a painful year for the troll, because that was the year Arizona's run of Pac-10 championships ended. And in hindsight, that was the year Arizona went down the tubes for good. They will never be the same after what we did to them.

That or the next year was also when the troll first showed up on this blog. He knew what had happened, and he became the pitiful little boy you've all known since then.

Figured no one would attempt to claim the Huskies would win that matchup. Pretty sure we played in the Elite 8 and were one meltdown away from another Final 4; you guys were already home, dreaming about how great your recruits are going to be next year and blah, blah, blah. What happened? Um, not even an NIT invite, and a home loss in a tourney that cost your school 60K to play in...great progress! I live in the now and cherish the past, and Lute will get another ring before he retires. Romar will only get another love handle, as he will continue to keep the Huskies as a bottom tier team in the Pac-10.

P.S. I love how you guys cling to beating my Cats a few times in one season, yet we went further when it matters in the NCAA tourney. Keep clinging to those Sweet 16's!

John- almost forgot, 04-05 my Wildcats were Pac-10 Champions. No one cares about the Pac-10 Tourney. Good try though. The Champs are the regular season Champs which my Cats were. Try to get your facts straight.

John- I know your intentions are to forget, but remember the 90-73 drumming at the hands of Oregon State late in the 2004-2005 season? That lost cost you guys a share in the Pac-10 title, that my Cats won with a 15-3 record. You guys finished 14-4, but yet, you somehow think you guys were champs? How so? Please explain.

Matty- You flip-flopping is quite amusing, and your stance that Brockman will be a 1st round pick shows how much of a blowhard homer you are. You lose more and more credibility by the minute.

"still stand by bradley and gaddy to texas. Im hoping for bradley though."

" I say realistic because gaddy and bradley are not. as much as Id love bradle I still think they both choose texas...maybe ucla?"

that 04-5 team was great. It was clear to me (no lie) that UW's most effective player in the Louisville loss was Roy- but the ball mostly was in Robinson's and Conroy's hands to make plays, a strategy that obviously served them well that year. Plus the foul trouble helped nothing. plus the fact that louisville was very good team.

they maybe would have been a couple of baskets closer if the huskies had played through roy as they did in 05-06.

on another note- what happened with oliver? Was he simply not that good, mid-major talent? did romar blow it with him somehow?I ask because it seems that until overton (who is a good, not great player) romar failed to recruit a playmaker for a few years. olievr may have been that guy. Now he's got thomas.

and soon gaddy, bradley, josh smith, tony wroten- whose commitments are imminent.

This is a strange argument to have. Of course Zona basketball is better then the UW. I graduated from UW in 98 and have seen both the last two eras of good husky basketball from the stands.

I'm not foolish enough to think that our program can compare to Arizona during either of these periods. 96 - 99 and 04 - 07.

I'm just excited for what we have. Romar is a great coach and will be here a long time. I don't know what the future of Arizona will be after Lute retires.

Perfectly stated rdmcabee.

rdmcabee- I hope you are right in that Romar stays for a long time; that will ensure that other schools will be on Top.

With my CAT's ranking #5 over the last 25 years I don't see any problems when Lute retires. He built the program with a steady foundation, and it will thrive and survive long after he retires. Just look at our recruiting class for next year so far...Moser and Hill are studs, and Gaddy is likely to follow suit real soon. Don't forget about Anthony Stover...things are looking quite sunny inTucson.

NEWSFLASH - This just in....No one here gives a rat's ass about UA basketball. If we did, we'd all be posting on the UA basketball blog at the Arizona Daily Star and eating pizza at No Anchovies on University Ave in Tucson.

OlyDawg- No Anchovies is rather average for pizza in Tucson. The students are smart enough to get a pie at Frog n Firkin, Grimaldi's, Rosati's, or Zacharies.

But this just in....you guys do care as Arizona is the upper echelon in Pac-10 basketball and you guys need to see how you can measure up.

Frog and Firkins is way too thick for my tastes. And as a student, No Anchovies is the cheap way to go and still be able to have a beer sitting outside.

And I still don't care about UA basketball.

On a side note, the students get a RAW deal at UA, having to sit in the old folks home known as the McHale Center, sitting behind the basket. Its no wonder why you rarely see students camping out to see a game, and little buzz about the team on campus.

After Lute leaves, I have a hard time seeing the blue hairs who take up the prime seats in the arena (sitting down 99% of the game) throwing their money behind a younger guy, but I could be wrong.

OlyDawg- True regarding the patio and the beer, but don't discount the hot wattresses from Frog who deliver a better selection of beers. No Anchovies serves its purpose and has made strides the last few years, but Frog is a true part of the UofA experience (much like BisonWitches)

Anyway....regarding your other point, yes the students get a raw deal and the grey beards need to show signs of life, but Lute has built a Top 5 program historically and that won't just go by the wayside when he retires. New young blood will be brought in, and the self-sustaining Athletic Department will have the funds to hire the best available coach. The thing is, our new Head Assistant coach in Mike Dunlap might actually be that guy...we shall see.....
