More on Kemp Jr.
Posted by Bob Condotta
SI.com has a pretty extensive article today on Shawn Kemp Jr., who is apparently having a good showing at the Reebok All-American camp this week.
The article lists Washington as having "strong interest'' in Kemp and also does a nice job of detailing his background and ties to the Seattle area. Word is that UW coach Lorenzo Romar is heading up the recruitment of Kemp --- that may be where Romar is this week as I know the Husky coaches are on the road.
As detailed on here earlier, however, UW appears to have just two scholarships, at most, left for the Class of 2009 after taking earlier commitments from Charles Garcia Jr., and C.J. Wilcox. UW is thought likely to take one more wing player and one more big man to fill out the class.
According to Scout.com, UW has offers out to five players other than Kemp. Scout does not list Kemp as having an offer from the Huskies.
But Kemp would obviously be a very intriguing prospect, and very attention-getting, and help keep alive in Seattle the name of one of the greatest Sonics ever at a time when the city is mourning the loss of that team.

Given that 4 of the outstanding offers are to guards, looks like UW is looking for guards.

Wait a minute. The Huskies could have both Isaiah Thomas AND Shawn Kemp at the same time?
Sign him up!
When you've got the opportunity to have two guys on your roster from the 1993 NBA All-star game, it seems like a no brainer.

Jamaal,
Its not as easy as doing that math. You have to look at when the current players graduate and you have Wolf Brockman Wallace Pondexter all being upperclassman. As for guards you have VO and Holiday with 3 more and IT Elston Turner and Suggs with 4. They need some of each and I hope Kemp is one of them, not just because his last name either. Check him out on youtube. He's real athletic and it sounds like he's started to become much more polished.

Jamaal: I wouldn't get too caught up in the labels - e.g., "guards" vs. "wings." In Romar's system, wings are guards. And Suggs and Wilcox can handle the ball as well as most conventional guards can.
That said, I'm not sure that Wolfinger will ever be a competitive player for us, and I've heard Romar say that he wouldn't be surprised if MBA left after his junior season. So, I can see why Romar might be looking for another big man for down the road.

Holiday is not a guard. He is a protoypical swingman al Boby Jones. Suggs will also be a 3.
We NEED guards. 4 of 5 outstanding offers are to guards. Gaddy, Bradley, Snaer and another guard all have offers. Romar wants guards. Kemp does not have an offer YET.
And you assertion about Wolf is incorrect. He will be a better 3-point shooter than Apps. There is something to be said for his ability to draw out the opposing big man when he is on the court. Wolf will be a sophmore this year.
2009/2010 roster.
Bigs - MBA, Wolf, Gant, Breshers, Garcia and maybe 1 more.
Wings - Pondexter (unless he blows up), Suggs, Holiday, Wilcox.
Guards - Venoy, Isaiah, Turner and atleast one more guard maybe 2.

Suggs handles the ball like a guard.

They need Bradley or Gaddy. It's not good to have the 3 top in-state guards go elsewhere in 2009.

Suggs is not a 3, his is a guard. He is a passer a ball handler and can do it all. He may be out there with 2 other guards at times but his one as well. for all the people that keep saying all the offers out are to guards are uninformed. The only guys we know have offers are guards because they have been interviewed but we only know what we know. The recruiting experts dont even know, the only people that know are Romar and the players

1. With talented freshmen and sophmore guards like Overton, Suggs, Thomas, and Turner (and both Suggs and Turner will be able to play the 1, 2 or even the 3 spot); along with talented young bigs like MBA and Breshers. There aren’t ANY immediate pressing needs on Romar for this particular recruiting class. Seems to me he has the freedom of pursuing the best talent/fit for the Huskies regardless of position.
2. And, because of the 4 talented young guards, you have to suspect that is factoring into Gaddy’s and Bradley’s decision process. Huskies will have an awfully full and talented back-court next year all fighting and likely deserving PT.
3. But…with that said…am I remembering incorrectly or is that a recent update on scout.com showing that Huskies made an offer to Justin Cobbs?

who remembers memphis? or whoever, i forget, they play 3 guards almost all the time and they could all shoot and would just kill ppl, that was 2 yrs ago,.... sounds like romar aiming for the same thing. with an up and down court style.

"UW is thought likely to take one more wing player and one more big man to fill out the class. "
Thought likely by whom. They already got the wing..his name is Wilcox. Dawgs are looking at 2 guards or 1 guard and 1 big.
Pondexter, Holiday, Suggs, and Wilcox are the wings.
Venoy, Thomas, and Turner are the guards.
MBA, Wolfinger, Garcia, Gant, Breshers are the bigs.
They NEED guards.
