Aguilar unsure about basketball
Posted by Bob Condotta
I had a chance today to talk with Husky receiver Devin Aguilar and in our conversation I asked him about whether he wants to play basketball at UW, as well.
Aguilar, you may recall, was also a D-I college basketball recruit out of Mullen High in Denver, reporting that he had offers in that sport from the likes of Utah, Iowa State and Wichita State.
Aguilar said he would like to play basketball at UW but that he'll only try to do it if he can make it work without conflicting with football.
"I would (like to), but it's based on how long the season goes for football,'' said the 6-foot, 185-pound Aguilar, who played point guard at Mullen.
"I love basketball. But as far as football, I just feel it's my job. It's a better way for me to go where I want to go at the next level rather than basketball, which I think is a little bit harder.
"I've talked to coach (Lorenzo) Romar and (assistant) coach (Cameron) Dollar, and they all want me to come out. I've watched some practices and I've played with some of the guys when I have spare time.''
He said he has become particularly good friends with Venoy Overton, counting him as one of his best friends at UW along with Husky cornerback Quinton Richardson.
The best-case scenario for the UW football team this season is obviously that it makes it to a bowl game, which would stretch its season into at least late-December. That could make it difficult to then try to play basketball, especially while also balancing the rest of the demands of being a football player and student.
But Aguilar said he will leave his options open.
"I'll just have to make that decision at that time,'' he said.
