Montgomery to Cal?
Posted by Bob Condotta
Well this will shake up the Pac-10 a little bit if reports that Mike Montgomery is going to be the next coach at Cal prove true.
Here's a report from ESPN.com.
Not only will that spice up the Cal-Stanford rivalry --- Montgomery was still on staff at Stanford this year as assistant to the athletic director --- but also possibly finally give test just how competitive Cal can be in basketball. Some coaches have said they think Cal could be a really good job because of the ability to get in special admits (something that has helped the football program return to prominence under Jeff Tedford).
If Montgomery can convince Ryan Anderson to return, the Bears could be an NCAA Tournament team next season, otherwise losing only the underachieving DeVon Hardin and sometime starter Eric Verneisel.
Montgomery stayed close to the game this season as an announcer --- one time this year he wandered up to press row at UW to chat with reporters beforehand, appearing especially relaxed.
IN OTHER NEWS
--- Sacramento State is done conducting interviews with the three finalists for its head coaching job (a group that included UW assistant Cameron Dollar) and the Sacramento Bee says "there doesn't appear to be a front-runner.''
--- And here's the latest on the search at Oregon State, which may now turn to former UW assistant Ken Bone, now at Portland State.
--- Also, one of you asked for a rundown of next year's schedule. There's nothing new at the moment than what I have previously reported. Oklahoma State is coming here as part of the Pac-10/Big 12 Challenge, and UW will play in the CBE Classic (with UW's opponents still unknown). UW is trying to get a home-and-home with a big name (not thought to be Gonzaga) that will start on the road next year. Other than that, it will similar to this year's schedule with teams like Portland State and Portland again coming in.
All for now.
