Houston next for Huskies?

Posted by Bob Condotta

Houston won at Nevada tonight, 80-79, to advance to the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational and set up a possible game at UW Monday.

Should the Huskies beat Valparaiso tomorrow night, UW and Houston will play next Monday at Hec Ed at 6 p.m.

And if that comes to pass, it will bring Houston coach Tom Penders back to the scene of one of his more excruciating days.

The last time Houston and Penders played at UW was Christmas Eve 2004 when the Huskies pasted the Cougars 110-63 (read about it here).

Afterward, Penders railed about the officiating (not the first guy not to like Pac-10 officials) saying "the game was not called within the rules. We had absolutely no chance to win that game.'' Later, he said if the game was held on a neutral floor that his team would win, asking "what are we, in some foreign country or something?''

By the way, the four CBI games tonight were decided by 14 points, so it's at least providing some competitive games. (Though only 4,252 attended the Nevada-Houston game, so none of the four games today drew very well).

And for those who think tournaments other than the NCAAs are a waste of time, I submit the tip dunk by the guy from Alabama State against Arizona State that I just witnessed. That alone was worth the existence of the NIT for this season.

Not to mention the game winning 3-point shot by some Creighton player to finish a huge comeback vs Rhode Island. An amazing finish to that game.

College basketball is college basketball. Absolutely I'd much rather be in the NCAA tourney right now over anything else. But after that, to me there is no difference between the NIT and CBI and both tourneys will hve their fun moments without a doubt.

For what it's worth I think the CBI did a pretty good job making up the best field they could with what was left over. Expected to see more major confernece schools, but after looking at the standings around the nation, you can really only say they "missed" on Wake Forest and maybe Texas Tech. As for Missouri and the rest of the Big 12 "passing" on the CBI, those teams were either in other tournaments or were undeserving. Would have like to see Wake Forest, Northern Iowa and Western Michigan in the CBI, but overall I think they did a pretty good job. Go Dawgs!

i understand this is a tourney game.....but why would you play Apple for more than 12 minutes..........and why would you not push Dentmon out the door?....his hoop IQ is beyond brutal.......my 2and half year old daughter has arguably more smarts.....why is Qpon has a million dollar physique but a 10 cent head after 2 years....Brockman is a stud but you cant run the system through him.......and anyone who has Memphis in their final four......what are you retarded??....

bob real quick not about the site;
some may disagree, but i think these recent design changes look great! the pages look a lot cleaner, and i like that the bar separating comments has been removed, its still easy to follow visually, but gives it more flow.

ps, tj ... god i wish you could be on the team. we would win so much!

brie you have to understand that tj is the most insightful person on this blog. He is thoughtful, original, and by all accounts, the greatest bb player to ever grace this Earth. Believe me, he is at best a high school drop out whose only hope to be part of the Husky BB team is to beg for money on a street corner and hope he scrapes together enough to buy a ticket to the game.
