WSU game thread

Posted by Bob Condotta

WOW, WHAT A GAME --- A great game, regardless of what side you were on. More later.

DOUBLE OVERTIME --- UW had some chances to put it away there but instead the Cougars force another OT. Deadline duties are keeping me away from contributing much here but I'll have lots more later.

OVERTIME --- UW hadn't really played a lot of barnburners this season so maybe it makes sense this one would go to OT. Huskies haven't had an OT game all season. Hard to tell who has the mo here --- UW blew a four-point lead, but Cougars blew two golden chances to win it there at the end.

HUSKIES HIT DROUGHT --- WSU has a 46-42 lead with 6:50 left as UW hasn't scored a field goal since the 12:05 mark. UW has gone 0-4 with three turnovers, two for shot clock violations, in that span.

HUSKIES RECLAIM LEAD --- UW leads 41-40 with 11:16 left and the Huskies have the ball. Those who took the Cougars and gave the nine might be getting a little nervous. On the other hand, UCLA pulled out one of the most amazing nine-point covers ever seen on Thursday night showing again why I can't believe anyone makes any money betting basketball.

PONDEXTER STRUGGLING --- Quincy Pondexter played well here a year ago, with 16 points. But he's struggling today with no points, three fouls and three turnovers in nine minutes. It's 37-34 WSU with 15:49 to go.

SOME HALFTIME NUMBERS --- UW is outrebounding WSU 24-13. UW is 11-29 shooting, WSU 11-26. Weaver leads all scorers with nine points while Appleby has eight for the Huskies.

COUGS END HALF ON 10-0 RUN ---- To take a 30-26 lead into the break. The good for UW is that the Huskies are this close despite shooting just 11-28. The bad is the Cougars were equally ragged early but have rallied to take a little momentum.

COUGS CLOSE GAP --- UW might have missed a real opportunity there to bust out to a significant lead with the Cougars ice cold. UW could have gone up seven with an open three-pointer by Dentmon. Instead he missed and it's now a one-point game, 26-25 with 2:07 left.

HUSKIES ON 13-5 RUN --- UW has taken the lead 22-18, causing the Cougars to call a time out with 5:15 to play in the first half. Appleby has eight points and is playing his best game against the Cougs.

ROMAR PARTICULARLY ANIMATED --- Lorenzo Romar seems particularly heated on the sidelines today, surely sick of losing to the Cougars. When Bryan-Amaning missed a box out that led to a foul and two Cougar points, Romar could be heard yelling at MBA "that's on you, box out'' even from up here in the press section, which is above the student section. Huskies are hanging tough, down 15-13 with 10:09 to go in the first half.

COUGS START ALL FIVE SENIORS --- Tony Bennett hadn't said how he would play little-used seniors Chris Henry and Jeremy Cross today. Ultimately, he decided to start them, and the Cougs looked a little out-of-sync early, as UW led 7-2. But WSU has a regular lineup in now and has closed to 7-6.

BEAVERS LOSE --- So the best the Huskies can do now is seventh. That's a good prize, however, as it means a game with Oregon State in the first round instead of Cal. So that's what is now at stake. To repeat, if the Huskies win they get the No. 7 seed since either Oregon or Arizona will lose today and UW has the tiebreaker on both

GANT IN UNIFORM --- UW freshman forward Darnell Gant is in uniform for today's game, but he won't play. He has not made many road trips this season, preferring to stay home to concentrate on academics and also saying he wanted to save that for when he is an active player next year. But he decided to make this one since it's a quick trip --- UW took a late afternoon flight --- and also decided to put on a uniform and go through warmups to get a little feel of a gameday atmosphere. It's the first time this year he has sat on the bench in uniform. He's allowed to do so since he is a redshirt by choice, meaning he is eligible to play this year but is choosing not to (transfers don't have such an option).

LOTS OF EMPTY SEATS IN STUDENT SECTION --- As WSU officials feared, there appear to be a lot of empty seats in the student section, one student telling me this is one of the worst turnouts of the Pac-10 season. The reason is that WSU's spring break has already started with many students heading out of town as early as Wednesday. There are 5,300 seats reserved here for students. Students here may be in danger of losing some of those as school officials see them open for big games like this, when tickets sold out. The tangible impact for UW could be a slightly less intimidating environment, though I think it will still be tough enough.

HUSKIES CLINCH EIGHTH --- UCLA's amazing, and sure-to-be controversial, comeback win against Cal assures that the Huskies will finish no worse than eighth.

The question now is if the Huskies can do better. With a win today and an ASU win, they will finish seventh, and a win and an Oregon State win would put them in sixth.

And look it here. As I write this, the Beavers are down just two with 11 minutes to play. So the Huskies could have a lot to play for today.

If the Huskies lose this game, they are assured of being the eighth seed in the conference tournament and facing Cal Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the opening round at Staples Center.

Well, as I figure it, the Cougs have got about 3-4 games left this year before...really sinks back in. They will lose their seniors, they will lose their coach and they will lose in the Pac 10 next year, quickly bringing the harsh realities of life in Pullman back to earth while the Dawgs, after a a 2 year hiatus - I will go out on a limb here and blame this phase on one ex-Husky in particular (Spencer Hawes)- will be back in the upper echelons of the Pac 10. The Cougs will be in the bottom 5 and the Dawgs will be in the top 5. Enough is enough...we have been "too nice" with these sweeties across the State for far too long. Bring on the Breshers, Gant, MBA, Brock and Co. and let's knock some reality back in these boys...They may get this one today but let's just say that this will be like a farewell gift.

If Bennett leaves after this year I will go away and never blog here again. I guarantee he is not even considering leaving. Anyone close to the Cougar program knows this and doesn't even talk about it any more. Give it up...it ain't gonna happen. All it does it help the Cougs to have all this speculation, so keep it up.

How can the Pac-10 be happy with the coverage by fox sports??? This broadcast is horrible and the commentating by Brian Davis is the worst yet. Nice fuzzt instant replay on the 3-pointer and the feedback in the audio too. Pathetic.

What is wrong with Brockman - way too many turnovers and forced shots. He looks lost out there.

Cougs will be a lot different team next year. Got to give this group and Bennett a lot of credit. But next year its back to the cellar. They have some talent coming back but in this conference they won't be able to hang - and likely with a new coach to boot.

You can't judge the Cougs tournament future based on this game. Fact is UW is a good team and would probably BE a tourney team in another conference or if they caught a few breaks or made a few free throws earlier in the year. They have matched WSU win for win over the last 5 weeks so this should be a close game. You might as well count UCLA out because they barely beat Cal.

Good game. Cougs have kept their composure down the stretch, as they usually do, got some calls, and should pull this one out. Dawgs blew their opportunities in regulation and the first OT.

Agree with what others have said about bad calls by officials, a lot of missed foul calls at the end but really just a terribly officiated game on both sides the whole night. Way too many fouls on both WSU and UW that should have never been called. Either way our offense is so stagnant we stood no chance without Brockman in. We can barely ever get Appleby open and Dentmon should not be handling the ball with the game on the line, he tripped over his own feet who the hell does that with the game on the line....

Hope Brockman is going to be OK for the P10 Tourney or this team isn't even going to the CBI.

I hope Brockman is okay, honestly I'd consider him a good candidate for POY. Nobody does more with less, an outstanding player.
Also, as a Cougar, I have to say that Baynes is irritating when he whines. He was pretty much contained all game until your guys fouled out or were hurt, obviously that got to him.
Great effort UW, I know it's not exactly soothing to hear, but you guys played a hell of a game and outworked us for all of regulation. Good luck in PX tourney, hope we don't meet up again.

Let's see when was the last time the Cougars have made it to the elite eight? How many Cougs are playing in the NBA? Who was the most overrated team in the Pac 10 this year? That would definately be the Cougs. Hey Cougs, when you guys actually get a program that goes somewhere let us know. WSU will always be a stepping stone university, no coach wants to stay there. Every coach is always looking for something better when they coach at WSU. You guys will always be the J.V. university.

Diehard Dawg fan here...no, what we saw tonight is why/how a team can lose 15 games. You just find ways to lose. WSU...I kind of don't get the gloating. A bad UW team takes you into double OT, you loes SIX conference games, haven't beaten a conference chamnpion even once in YEARS...and really were not even in the PAC-10 hunt this year. After that early gag last year blowing a really good draw, help me understand the final four talk...or was that final four of the PAC-10 tourney? I have really bad news for cougy fans ...as you found last year, you don't get to play OSU and UW in the NCAA's. And someone needs to wake up that coach of the year...seems to have under achieved this year...so I guess if beating the UW is the ultimate, then party on...but Stanford and UCLA are probably a little better barometer.

and for us Husky fans....this was just another example of how to lose...actually make a few FT's, outrebound the opponent by 17, and find a way to lose...that is what losing teams do...and what this one does all year long...for two years...

Posted by huskiefan@aol.com

7:35 PM, Mar 08, 2008

I am really sick. Can we make a free throw..can we get a rebound? Losing 7 straight times to the Cougars......Can we really be arguably the worst team in the PAC 10 in football and basketball? If you add the 2 programs together, and compare them to any other PAC 10 school...who is worse? I think we have two HORRIBLE coaches. No one listened to me when Brandon Roy and Bobby Jones were playing....but I said it then..ROMAR is a nice guy, but a lousy coach. He is proving that now. 7 straight losses to WSU? How can any Husky stand for this? You might as well put a plate of Cougar manure in front of me for dinner, and hand me a knife and fork...thats how I feel......

Apparently the PAC 10 got the memo from UCLA how mad they were that Morris wasnt called for a technical.

PAC 10 refs give UCLA two wins this week with an atrocious foul call in final second of the Stanford game on a blocked shot and then an even worse no call on the mugging of Ryan Anderson against Cal. Oh ya, and as if the no call wasn't enough, the ball went off the bruins. But they gave it to UCLA anyways.

The refs in this league are a joke.

Posted by Dawgfan

7:48 PM, Mar 08, 2008

I actually am going to comment on the officiating. I looked up the stats and the fouls were 26 for the huskies to 19 for the cougs. I can't remember how many fouls were called on the cougs in overtime, but it couldn't have been more than 2. Also, the cougs don't seem to have a deep bench yet all five of their normal starters (each playing 38 minutes or more) never fouled out. Meanwhile, the huskies had two of their players foul out with nine players getting substantial minutes. I normally don't complain about the officiating, but this game seemed to be a little biased in my opinion.

First of all, scoreboard. Second of all, if you are gonna try to bash WSU for being a stupid cow school (maybe 50 years ago), then you have to use proper grammar (you're vs your. know it, idiots). Third, the refs were awful, but did not decide this game. No rhythm was established at all, the game was broken up every couple trips down the floor by a whistle. SO incredibly frustrating... I especially hated the 5 straight foul calls toward the end of the first half. I also hated how they didn't call ANY reaches and all blocks. For reference, 5 fouls on UW in OT's, 2 on WSU. However, 2 on WSU and 1 on in the first OT. The last few fouls of the 2nd OT were all pretty obvious ones on Overton, so don't complain about imbalance. The Cougs tried as hard as they could to give you this game for 37 minutes... too bad you couldn't take advantage of it.

Posted by Coug4Dead

8:40 PM, Mar 08, 2008

Hey Krissie...did you watch ESPN...they even questioned the Pac 10 officials. They suck...and yes, they impact the outcome of games. Why? They simply don't let the kids play. I watched the game and I counted at least 15 HIGHLY questionable calls. Were any of them game deciding? Not one. Did any of them have an impact on how the game was played? All of them. Point made: let them play. Did you see the Duke/NC game? Much more physical but as coach Williams and K said, they (the refs) let them play. That's all I am asking for. And you worry about reaching calls? No wonder we get our asses kicked when we play in international competition. And you want to question English grammer: "gonna" is not a real word my friend. It's a frickin' blog.

Great game to watch, the way the Coug fans are talking you'd think they were a top 10 team. Good luck in the tourney, and the first or second round exit. I know at least your going. There are only a few more weeks of listening to the Coug fans, because they will be now where to be found when they return to bottom four of the Pac-10.

Posted by WSU

9:14 PM, Mar 08, 2008

Dear Coug4Dead, thanks. Apparently you are such a mature, educated person... it really shows. Guess what, a reach is a foul. If you are reaching all over the place and end up getting a steal and bucket because you knocked the guy's hand off the ball, it should be a foul. And yes, the officiating impacted the game because there was no rhythm. However, it wasn't unequally bad in this game. Not sure what ESPN you're watching, but we're not on it. They were talking about UCLA (duh) and yes, THAT actually changed the outcome of the game.

BTW, did I write Krissie? Thats not my name, dick. What are you, the ugly 12 year old kid on the block who has to compensate for something? Oh yeah, I don't care about abbreviations and/or slang or anything, but if you (or anyone) can't spell simple words correctly or discern which form of a word to use, your argument means nothing. Just a good laugh.... If you spend your life posting on a blog and come up with some witty response because you have to have the last word... who cares. I'll be off doing something better than surfing blogs.

Tom...the cougs took the Dawgs best effort??? ummmm I don't think so...highest turnover total of the season, typical 60% FT shooting, hacking and lousy shooting....no, sorry they have had better games than this...they arent very good but this was NOT the best game they have played

Hey Boobie Boy....the Huskies suck and you know it. Sorry to be a Husky fan for another year but hey, facts don't lie. Your team is barely playing .500 ball and that is considering that before PAD-10 play they played the likes of Fullerton, Cal St. Riverside High School, and Ballermine Women's Prep. Even playing them they are barely even. Can I laugh my assssssssss off now??? :-)
