Beavers already fired up for Huskies

Posted by Bob Condotta

It'll be a battle of the bottom two teams in the Pac-10 conference in Corvallis tomorrow, which on paper, has yawner written all over it.

But if what happened at the end of UW's practice Friday at Gill Coliseum is any indication, the game may pack an NCAA Tournament-intensity level.

As the Huskies were wrapping up practice at Gill around 1 p.m. or so --- a few players shooting around on the court while a few others conducted interviews (with others having already left or conducting conditioning drills elsewhere) --- a group of Beavers walked in,including senior forward Marcel Jones, and began yelling at the Huskies, talking about "not doing that in our house.''

They appeared to be taking offense most at UW guard Venoy Overton, who was playfully taking a few shots in the key, adding a little commentary along the way.

UW coach Lorenzo Romar broke away from a conversation with a reporter to act as peacemaker, stepping in between the two groups before anything got serious --- no punches were thrown or anything of that sort.

Jones seemed the most heated of the Beavers, and he's apparently done this before. The two teams exchanged a few words when they crossed paths during the pre-game shootaround prior to UW's win over Oregon State in Seattle last month with Jones apparently leading the way then, as well. Overton said later that Jones continued to bark at the Huskies all game.

"Even his teammates were like 'don't worry about him. He's all talk,'' Overton told a few reporters after the game.

Jones may have had that on his mind as most of his comments seemed directed at Overton. As the Huskies left, Jones shouted "don't let the record fool you'' an apparent reference to OSU's 0-12 Pac-10 mark. Jones is well-acquainted with many of the Huskies, having often worked out with them last spring while spending time in Seattle during the period when he was debating whether to declare for the NBA Draft.

If you recall, the first meeting was one of UW's most heated games, with Overton and OSU guard Seth Tarver getting into a brief skirmish, and Jon Brockman and OSU's C.J. Giles --- now departed --- each tetting technicals for an incident in the final minutes. Tarver was also among the group of players saying a few words to the Huskies Friday.

Jones is quoted in today's Oregon State student newspaper, the Daily Barometer, as saying that the game with the Huskies is "going to be intense, just like it was up there. It's going to be a war.''

Those initially read like cliches. No more.

Bob you are going to need to expound on "Venoy Overton, who was playfully taking a few shots in the key, adding a little commentary along the way."

I am confused at to how this incident escalated into Jones exclaiming that something should not be done in his house. What exactly is it that should not be done in Jones' house, that Overton was apparently doing ? This game is on tv right? It sounds like the type of game that will need to be watched as it wont be a sleeper, and has the potential to be highly embarrassing. Huskies better go in with that UCLA-out toughing atmosphere.

Reagrdless of what Overton said to Jones, how in the world can the guy be so arrogant when his team hasn't won a SINGLE Pac 10 game...I feel embarassed for that guy.

I was at the other end of the court (actually, sitting in the bleachers talking with Romar) so I couldn't really hear clearly a lot of what was said. But just sounded as if Overton shooting around talking a little bit and that's what they took offense to --- though I think they just wanted to find something to take offense to, the way it looked to me. Probably didn't matter what Overton was doing. Joel Smith also rushed over and was getting into it before Romar took control and got hustled the UW contingent out of there.

Great reporting, Bob! Thanks for staying in Corvallis. That deserves applause in itself.

Cripes, how stupid is all of this? Here are the two worst temas in the Pac Ten trash talking.

I can imagine what they were saying...

"I bet I miss more shots than you!"

"Oh ya, well I can't defend anyone and don't you forget it!"

"Don't be turning the ball over in my house...that is what we do!"

HAHAHAHAHA! This is hilarious. Look, I am a Duck fan and hate both of the teams involved, however tomorrow I will be cheering for Worshington because I hate the beavers more, I want to see them 0-18 in conference, and they are the only 0-12 conference team that would trash talk. Things like this makes it so easy to hate the beavers.

Marcel Jones is ridiculous. Here is a guy trash-talking who last year declared for the NBA Draft and then after everyone laughed at him and told him he wouldn't be drafted, he decided to stay in school.

Some game tomorrow in Corvallis -futile vrs crappy. At least I know what I’m NOT going to be watching tomorrow. Heck, even shopping with the wife sounds like heaven compared to having to watch your team’s game and I HATE shopping.

Bob....you have got to take public speaking classes. I heard you on KJR tonight and Gas asked you a simple question and you rambled on...and on....and on....and on....and on....and on......FOR LITERALLY FIVE MINUTES before you shut your trap and allowed Gas to say anything else.

If KJR is stupid enough to put you back on I swear the radio's rating will literally sink - no one wants to be put to sleep at 6 on a Friday night.

Sorry for the hard cold truth Bob but you stink on radio. And your constant 'you knows' are also a sorry thing. Sure glad you don't write that way....of course, you probably take ten minutes per sentence so you don't read like a dork.

OK, that's it for me tonight.

I'll save you the trouble, genatali-o. Matt-y, he's a lawyer, who are you? Are you a lawyer, because geno is! Show some respect Matt Y, geno's a lawyer and you're not! Did I mention that geno's a lawyer? Well, he is and that makes him better than the rest of us and more knowledgable about college basketball.

Boise....easy now big boy. While I appreciate the admirable defense of my character and profession I am by no means extremely knowledgeable on college basketball. While I follow college basketball quite a bit there appears to be a few here on this blog that follow it even more.

Do they know how to evaluate talent? Most likely not especially after reading their many ramblings on this Husky saviors’ arrival and eventual bust and that Husky saviors’ arrival and eventual bust….I can only conclude that this part of ‘the game’ is not their expertise.

What they might be good at then is evaluating coaches for quite a few here on this site blogged that they wanted to resign Romar to an extension after the Husky’s win over UCLA last weekend. Now this is where I object to their state of intelligence but applaud them for their spirit and representation of UW sports. I say this because as long as the Husky’s have this type and level of fans their sports programs will only get worse and worse – which will only benefit WSU and the PAC-10 as a whole.

I say LONG LIVE ROMAR…and LONG LIVE WILLINGHAM – two of a kind…both loser coaches.

Sorry...I didn't mean to ramble like Bob did last night but at least I realized it.

Hey Geno,

Why don't you go play in traffic. Don't you have anything better to do than post lame comments?

Actually, you can't have a life or you wouldn't be here posting this nonsense.

You should find a girlfriend or a hobby. Or maybe just hang yourself. That might be the best option.

RobbieG, being a Husky fan I was worried if you'd be cheering for us or not, thanks. I however would be more likely to cheer for any Beav team over any uck team. We went to both Cornvalley and Eujane last year. OSU fans, OK when they were awake, O fans like their logo...zero class.
