USC post-game

Posted by Bob Condotta

About 30 minutes after the game, as we were typing our stories from press row, Quincy Pondexter and Joe Wolfinger came back to the court, some basketballs and a couple of managers in tow.

At first we figured maybe the entire team was due to follow. This was the kind of game where something like that might have been called for.

Instead, these were solo efforts --- Pondexter worked out for 20 minutes or so on the main floor, Wolfinger apparently headed to one of the other practice courts, each seemingly trying to make something of another lost night for the Huskies.

This was the third straight home loss in the third game of a four-game homestand that figured to make-or-break the season. It may be just about time to consider it broken.

UW was simply outclassed by the Trojans, who ran by and dunked over the Huskies the way the Huskies did to other teams a few years ago.

USC shot 27-52 (51.9 percent) while UW was 26-72 (36.1 percent). The Huskies were a mere 2-21 from the three-point line, 9.5 percent, the worst of the season.

Most damning was the 19-0 USC run after the Huskies had scrapped back to tie it.

"Mainly, we missed a lot of shots and we couldn't get a flow going,'' said UW guard Tim Morris afterward.

In fact, UW missed 12 straight shots during that run.

"When they went on the 19-0 run we missed some shots and I just thought we were negligent,'' said UW coach Lorenzo Romar. "We didn't rotate defensively and we weren't able to sustain a solid effort on the defensive end for the entire shot clock. We turned the ball over and it just began to unravel at that point. I probably waited too long to call time outs in that situation. I thought we could've called a couple.''

Romar had made a rare admission before the game, going with a 2-3 zone to start sticking with it for most of the night.

"I didn't feel we matched up very well in the beginning with the five that we had,'' Romar said.

But like everything else UW has tried of late, it did little good. USC isn't a great three-point shooting team, another reason to go with a zone, but the Trojans hit 5-13 and were able to get a lot of penetration to set up other shots.

Asked how USC got such good penetration, Romar said "because we weren't doing a good job (defensively). I wish I could give you some complex answer, but we just didn't do a good job of keeping them in front of us.''

It doesn't get any easier now with UCLA due in Sunday, fresh off a win over the Cougars in Pullman, and also given an extra day's rest.

UW has just three home games left --- UCLA, Arizona and Arizona State --- and little wiggle room left to avoid its first losing record since Romar's first season in 2002-03.

"We can't hang our heads,'' Romar said afterward. "We cannot hang our heads. That's when it can get bad.''

interesting....I wonder if they were asked to go shoot or if they just did it on there own. I feel bad for QP...all the talent in the world just doesnt know how or have the confidence to use it. QP is only a soph so maybe he will come around once I.T. gets here. Overton needs to play all game....I think he could be the real deal! all the frosh need to be playing 30 plus minutes from here on out. somethings gotta give.....

With nothing positive to analyze about the Husky play (with exception of that by Justin Holiday during final minutes), I thought I might bother asking why the national anthem is being sung 10 minutes before the start of the game. The players aren't even on the floor. Why sing in a stadium with no players and people still filing in? Is this a change for all games or just those at Husky Stadium?

So where is the leadership among the players on this team? Romar calls this a more cohesive team than 2004-06? Who on this team makes their teamates better players? I know that this may seem blaspemy, but does Brockman make his teamates better (note: I am not saying Brockman isn't a great player - this is about chemistry and team)? Isn't this his team? 2004-06, the team belonged to Roy and Conroy - and they made their teamates better. Who on the floor does this team belong to? There seems to be an accountability issue on the floor; makes it easy for players to leave, or to stay and mail it in.
So, coaching, players, or some of both?

I recorded the game but haven't watched it yet. Reading the game coverage and comments it seems like time to let the three Freshman play a lot. They will at least give good effort and its hard to see how the perimeter play could be much worse.

Smith, Appleby, Morris are seasoned and experienced. I don't see them getting much better and Appleby and Morris will be gone when the season concludes. JD occasionally has his moments but I must say I hope he is not the level of our starters next year. Keep encouraging and playing QP because he at least has the talent if not the performance; maybe he will get it together. Determine to give playing time to the ones who give maximum effort even if they are less experienced. There is a real chance the team will give up. I hope not.

Romar has ruined this team and lost this team. No chemistry, no flow, and no ability to create any momentum. No one appears to know their role with all of the earlier line up changes and "experiments". No confidence. Romar needs to step up and take the blame and the heat - this is HIS team. He needs to start over or find a new method because it doesn't look like it's going to get any better.

Romar gets out-coached in every game. He has never coached at a high major school. His success at UW was the result of inheriting great players who would have won for anyone and all Romar had to do, and did, was just roll out the ball. That style just does not work in the Pac 10 any longer, and Romar simply does not have the skills to compete in this conference.

Glad to see QP was out on the court after the game shooting.

Now if he would only shoot during the games, maybe he would help the cause. I don't even care if he missed all his shots at this point. I just want to see him actually take a good open shot instead of head faking 4 times and then throwing the ball away or getting stripped of it.

I would have to agree with some of the other posters.

I think the program is in serious trouble. Romar is my first concern. At some point, you have to take kids and make them better. You have to give them tactical and strategic guidance so they can execute.

They look totally hapless out there trying to play rat-ball like it is still 2005.

I just checked out the box score - wow. Looks a lot like the Stanford game. Those of you calling for the freshmen to start playing a lot more, you're exactly right. Time to start looking to the future. Despite what the coach has said, this does not look like a cohesive group and that might be because the 2 seniors transferred in. This team just seems to have a collective fragile psyche.

But it's time to put things into some perspective. The Pac10 may never be this strong again - and next year will be a completely difference league. No Love, Collison, Mayo, Lopezes, Weaver, Lowe, Bayless, Anderson (?)Budinger (?), Harden (?), etc. Pac10 graduates could potentially comprise almost half of the NBA 1st round next year. Dawgs were just not talented enough to compete this year - that's why it's so important to start developing for the future - because this team could still be very competetive in a year or two. After the Sweet 16's and the recruiting coups, no one expected a down year like this. But long term things still look good for the program - I really like VO, MBA, and Holiday and the variety they bring to the table. And next year's class looks strong. It stings, but we all just have to be patient with the program. I still believe in Romar and despite the lack of talent, with a break here and there (Pitt, WSU, Cal) this season could have been a lot different. Those of you who yearn for the Bender days, he had 2 good seasons which were almost solely because of a 7 foot Canadian named Todd MacCullough who no one else recruited and who dominated the Pac10.

Look for this program to be competitive again in 2 years - I know, seems like a long way off.

I am still of the mind that the issue with QP deals with coaching. I think he has been beat down so much by coaches for playing too aggressive and out of control at times that he has become tentative and over thinks everything. The times when he has looked the best was when he was free flowing and running the floor. No joke. Remember his best games last year? I am beating a dead horse here, but since the chemistry on this team is broken I say let the kids play and let them RUN! I think you have to keep QP in to build his confidence. Roll out Overton, QP, Holiday, MBA, and Brockman and see what happens. I would rather see effort and mistakes rather than no confidence, no heart. What have we got to lose at this point?

I also have a hard time understanding Romar's recent love of the big center. He has never had that as a luxury in most of his coaching career. Agree with the poster who said that Spencer Hawes set us back 3 years. I have nothing against Wolf, but he doesnt seem Div 1 to me. He can shoot but he cant defend. Would venture to say Hakeem Rollins was the best center we had. He was solid all the way around, and he blocked shots.

Point is that Romar's best teams have been the smaller up tempo teams. Basketball is about enforcing your will on the other team. They need to get back to that instead of trying to match up the best they can with each team in the hopes of competing that way. That's a defeatist attitude.

quickly;
justin holiday looked exciting tonight. maybe its because it was scrap time. maybe its because it was usc scrub players. but i think he was making an argument for more playing time. he played with a lot of gumption and desire to be playing. i cant remember if it was him or gant that at the start of the year made a comment that he just loved playing basketball, but either way, i want justing holiday in games earlier. i dont care how skinny he is. let him get pushed around so he knows to bulk up in the off season. hes got reaaally long arms and as we saw in the minutes he played tonight, he can get in the mix and make some things happen. he seems a bit shot shy, but at this point i think we have all concluded that VO, MBA, Holiday and Qpon need to be on the floor a substantial amount each game.

and on the dawg pack. it use to be that entire three sections, but it has been cut into only the middle section it seems, due to the two wings being opened up to general sales. i know a lot of students who were not able to get tickets this year because of this reason. i think it is a very poor decision, and if i knew who made it, i would be writing them a letter. i think the decrease in sheer amount of student fans at the games this year has resulted in there being less of an impact on visiting teams. i remember my first few years here, and we couldnt even find space to stand in the far wings. now they sell those tickets to the public. and they just sit on there hands.

P.U. Put a fork in this season, its done. I would only play Applehead and Morris in deep reserve at this point (5-7 minutes per game). Let JD and JS get some minutes as they will be back next year but let MBA, QPon, Overton and Holiday (and of course big Jon) get the bulk of the playing time. We are going to lose anyways, we might as well give these kids a real taste of playing the Pac-10 so we can develop for next year. I would pull Wallace's and Wolfy's (what a waste of a 7 footer)scholarships and go find some hungry junior college players that want to play under the hoop. What a disgusting season. I'll give Romar 2 more years but I won't be renewing my season tickets after that if this type of slop play remains and he remains.

Romar's ineptitude is being blatantly exposed. No longer having better talent than the opposition, he is being asked to coach, adjust, develop players. He is showing an inability to do so. This team is getting worse. Q has regressed tremendously and he's our most talented player.
Explain why MBA is not playing 35 minutes a game. Play the young ones who have at least shown flashes of ability.
It appears no one has any idea what their role is and that's understandable the way Romar substitutes without any rhyme or reason.
"we didn't feel we matched up well with our starting five?" Then adjust. Don't play a defense that you don't like to play. Maybe get Artem out of there and alter the lineup.
The last time we saw any semblance of an organized, effective half court offense is when Ken Bone was sitting on the bench.

It's time to make Romar accountable. The love fest is long over. How many years did we sign him up for??????

Two suggestions for Romar: Fall out of love with Appleby. When he hits 50% on threes the team spends way too much time and effort getting him those shots. Think of all the time and effort spent trying UNSUCCESSFULLY to get him open! There are other options out there. Probably Romar should just ban the three for the remainder of this season. No. two, spend the time saved in practice by not shooting threes on PRACTICING FOUL SHOTS. Every player should have to hit 10 consecutive shots before entering the remainder of the practice activities. Then at the end of practice shoot another 10 consecutively or shoot frees for one hour, whichever comes first.
.
Extra credit suggestion: Don't use a zone for more than one or two possessions in a row and then just to attempt to disrupt the oppositions flow.
.
Go Huskies! Get Better...
.
congratulations, your captcha is captachaing me just over 50% of the time. Does this meet your goals???

How many times do we have to hear "We didn't bring energy or hustle". My god, it's up to everyone to get motivated to play.

You can blame some of that on the coach but some of that falls on the players. Seems like there are no leaders on this team.

Frustrating......

I feel the entire program slipping back into one where recruits don't want to come here, and coaches don't want to coach here. This is one of the worst shooting teams of all time. I find it hard to believe that we can't recruit players who can make jumpshots and free throws. It's pathetic, and I know a lot of high school teams who have kids that can flat out shoot the rock. Based on the lack of player development, and the apparent misevaluation of talent, I think it's time to start looking at Romar's job. I know this sounds crazy, but is it possible that his entire reputation at Washington (as a coach), was built on the 2 best players in school history being on those teams, and that he's just the coach we thought he was, when we settled for him as our 3rd or 4th option.

FYI Brie:
The entire north side (lower bowl) is set aside for students and the Dawg Pack. The only exceptions are a couple of front rows set aside for team personell, parents, visitng team allocation, and occasionally recruits. Nothing has changed.....including an "overflow" in the upper bowl for students.

I'm befuddled that Lorenzo keeps bemoaning the defense when it's the offense that is most "offensive." This team has no shooters, save Appleby on a hot streak. Who can win shooting 2-21 beyond the arc? Or

I agree with the posters who say give MBA, VO, Holiday more minutes. They're not going anywhere this year, let's see what they have.

It's disheartening to see all the fabulous freshmen for other PAC 10 teams light it up when our vaunted freshment struggle. They need a dose of confidence that consistent PT might provide.

We have had season tickets for abotut 6 year now. The thing I keep noticing about this team is how undisciplined they are. Dentmon still makes foolish plays, Appleby's defense is questionable, and, most importantly, they frequently seem as though they have no idea what is giong to happen on any given offensive series. It's pretty easy to win games with guys like Roy and Robinson. Coaching becomes more of a factor when the talken isn't as deep.
