Adrian Oliver update

Posted by Bob Condotta

Rivals.com recently caught up with former Husky Adrian Oliver (you can access the story here though it is part of the site's premium content).

In the story, Oliver said he is checking out San Jose State this weekend and is also looking at Cal, Fresno State and Pacific, all schools close to his hometown of Modesto.

There are a couple of interesting comments from Oliver about his UW tenure, notably that he wanted to play primarly the two guard while the Huskies were hoping to use him more at the point.

"It is tough,'' he said. "You play a certain position for 15 years of your life and now you have to change.''

Oliver also said that his relationship with Lorenzo Romar "was tested'' the last few months and that "perhaps we aren't as tight as we used to be. But I think there's a lot of respect between us. I know he understood my situation.''

Oliver said he expects to make a decision on a new school by mid-January.

Listen, Rivals, if he's so damn good why is he looking at San Jose State, Pacific and Fresno State? Why no other comers? USC needs some players...

Romar is a great developer/preparer of players for the NBA. If Oliver wanted to succeed at the next level, he should have gone after the opportunity to play point. He's not tall or athletic enough to succeed as a two guard in the NBA. He needs to develop ball handling skills ala BRoy or NateRob. I'd side with Romar on that one..... Oliver should have sucked it up and learned how to play point.

Well LA Husky, maybe AO is telling the truth. He said he wants to play closer to home. USC is not close to Stockton.

Mix, maybe AO doesn't have the illusion that he is going to play in the NBA. Maybe he just wants to enjoy playing college ball and playing the position that gives him the most pleasure and that he is most comfortable with.

Sometimes kids have their own agenda, not ours. Why hate on him for that?

Bob,

I have to say, this new format stinks. It is harder to post, the Captcha characters are unreadable most of the time, and it takes two or three tries to post.

I just love it when tech folks "improve" things.

he seems like a nice guy, it's too bad it didn't work out. however i have no sympathy for him losing minutes for not wanting to change his game in order to fit into a college system. as a player you should serve in the best interests of your team. he has more of a point guard's body than shooting guard. it's unfortunate that it didn't work out at the u, but after hearing that he wanted to play more shooting guard and that was a deciding factor i'm less upset about seeing him go. we have more natural shooting guards on our roster.

re the article today:
"Romar admits that it was hoped Wallace's offensive game might have progressed more by this point in his career."
While this may be true, I think we have also seen some pretty impressive flashes recently, where Artem has made some very difficult shots while being heavily guarded. I would love for him to continue to start, it shows spots are being earned and work is being done.

dont' put the hate on Oliver. he's a good kid. it's tough for 18-19 year olds to be away from home. if you've ever been the stud on your team, you'll understand that it's tough going from big fish in high school to minnow in D1. good luck to Oliver and hopefully he'll find what makes him happy.

Mix: I disagree. I'm not so sure Romar is a good developer. Look at Brockman and Q. Brockman hasn't developed an offensive game outside of garbage points & hustle. He doesn't have any moves, doesn't have moves with his back to the hoop. Then there's Q. BRoy was always smooth, just needed maturity and time to get ripe. Nate is just a freak of nature, without the hops he wouldn't be balling in the NBA.

Good luck down in Cali. Hopefully some school closer to home is looking for a sissy to play the 2.

Bob's article on Wallace is really lame. What's the point - that the Huskies have finnnnnnnallly seen the light on defense??

You don't change your entire basketball philosophy whenever you like. You still have the players playing. Think they are going to all of a sudden 'play differently'? Heck no....they are still rabid idiot puppies eager to please. They won't all of a sudden turn into defensive geniuses.

Man, I am sure glad Romar is on your side because he it toooooooooo stupid a basketball coach for the likes of WSU.

Thinking that the Huskies will all of a sudden become defensive minded......how idiotic.

This format is terrible. This is supposed to be an improvement? Like the other guy said, I can't read the characters for crap. Also, form fields obscure my view of my text box. This really does suck.

Bob: I agree with all of the comments regarding this new blog posting format. First of, the security code is hard to read. Second, if I'm reading all of the comments then have to scroll up to input my comments, then that sucks too.

Third, I thought you were going to put a filter in to keep GENO out of this :) Merry Christmas to all!

Merry Christmas sammamish dawg. Do your comments about me mean I am off your Christmas list?

The best to the UW Basketball program........NOT!

Geno...Yah, your were deleted from the Christmas list. Santa Emmert won't be sending you anything this year. Unless of course it's to announce the hiring of a DC. By the way, how many football committs do your Cougs have now? was the 4?

GO DAWGS!!!!

1. Adrian Oliver has no shock going from big fish to guppie. His high school running mate (and classmate) at Modesto Christian was Michael Porter, now starting at Kentucky.

2. I'd be shocked if he landed at Pacific. Bob Thomason is a great coach, but UOP hasn't scored a non-diagrammed basket in about five years.

AO needs some room to move. He'd be an impact player at Fresno State, would be battling incoming No. 2 guard D.J. Seeley (now a senior at Modesto Christian) at Cal.

The San Jose State concept is interesting and perhaps makes more sense. They have a freshman point guard (Justin Graham) who is a friend of AO. Their schools (MC and Ripon High) are three miles apart. Justin Graham's sister (Jessica) plays at MC and already has committed to Idaho. San Jose plays up-tempo, which obviously would suit AO.

AO a Spartan? We will find out very soon.

Whatever. I'm sure this is the last we'll hear of AO. Just goes to show how far off Rivals is.
