Huskies flagship station lays off three

KJR-AM, the flagship station for UW football and men's basketball, laid off three employees today, apparently as part of corporate downsizing.

KJR-AM is owned by ClearChannel Communications, which is based in San Antonio. According to this report, the company is today laying off three percent of its workforce nationwide.

Those laid off, according to sources, include Dick Fain, who appears on Dave "Softy" Mahler's show each day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mahler is an unabashed Huskies booster whose show is popular with UW fans. Fain also headed up a lot of the station's high school coverage popular with UW fans.

Others laid off reportedly are Brian Lambert, a producer for Mahler's show as well as "Groz with Gas'' from 3-5 p.m.; and Andy Bunker, a producer for the Mike Gastineau show.

ClearChannel had a round of layoffs earlier this year that impacted a few of its Seattle stations but didn't touch KJR.

UW's contracts for its radio rights are with ISP Sports, which then negotiates with the individual stations. That deal runs through the 2012-13 academic year.

According to a source, "nine or 10'' people being laid off throughout all of the six ClearChannel Seattle stations.The three listed above are the only three from KJR-AM.
