A couple more Qwest Field-Apple Cup notes
Posted by Bob Condotta
A few other facts on this have surfaced today:
--- First, it would apparently be a six-year agreement beginning in 2010;
--- The game would be played Thanksgiving weekend each year. That would help alleviate the problem of opening up a bye week for each school that has proved troublesome at times the past few years, especially in seasons when the game is played in Pullman ---- no one has warmed to the idea of playing the Apple Cup any later than the Saturday before Thanksgiving in Pullman, which limits the scheduling options for each school in those years. UW has resorted to playing games after the Apple Cup in an attempt to open up some byes in the schedule.
--- One of UW's main motivations for considering it is the financial imbalance in splitting the revenue from this game 50-50. That means UW turns over a much larger share to WSU in years the game is in Seattle then it gets from WSU in years the game is in Pullman. To be frank, there's little questioning the motivation behind this at UW --- money. One person said "the finances would be so significant that that's the primary reason we are having discussions about it in the first place.''
